Schmaltz is one of the many Yiddish words that have worked their way into American English. It's used to describe something excessively sentimental or corny. Other Yiddish words you may be familiar with include bagel, schmear, chutzpah, klutz, and verklempt. But, what's so special about this language, and what is its origin? Emory University Yiddish professor Miriam Udel has just published a collection of children’s stories and poems she’s translated from Yiddish called “Honey on the Page.”
