People with a rare disorder called severe combined immune deficiency—SCID—don’t have a functioning immune system. That means they are prone to serious infections and have to get lifelong injections if they can’t get a bone marrow transplant. But a recent groundbreaking clinical trial conducted by Donald Kohn, a microbiologist and immunologist at UCLA, was able to rebuild children’s immune systems. (Segment produced by Sam Faulconer)
