In both the United States and Canada, indigenous people experience homelessness at much higher rates than white people. Jesse Thistle was in that category for most of his young adulthood, but ultimately, it was the love of others and a connection with his indigenous heritage that saved him. Today, Thistle–a professor of indigenous history at York University in Toronto–helps indigenous youth connect to their ancestry, and he has a memoir called “From the Ashes.”
