Artists most famously depict Mary in two ways: either looking radiantly down at the newborn son of God or holding the lifeless body of Christ just down from the cross.
But, early Christian art portrayed Mary in a very different way. They drew great meaning from envisioning Mary in domestic life—not just a sainted mother of the Son of God, but a woman in her own right.
