A study of sixth, seventh and eighth graders showed disadvantaged youngsters who started off believing the world is fair and everyone has the same shot at success in life ended up falling farther into things like fighting, cheating and stealing as reality set in. It’s as if their optimistic view of the world turned into a serious liability when they learned the truth.
