Twitter began testing a new feature meant to protect people from the flood of harassment that can come when the Internet decides someone deserves to be cancelled. “Safety Mode” screens harassing messages so the target of the abuse doesn’t have to see them. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Professor of Communication Alice Marwick has developed a theory that explains why these call out campaigns happen so often online and why otherwise polite people are so quick to pile on.
