Are Doctors to Blame for Drug Resistant Superbugs?
Top of Mind with Julie Rose • Season 1, Episode 1736, Segment 1Antibiotic overuse in hospitals may be fueling the problem of drug-resistant infections. CDC researchers recently published data showing more than half of antibiotics prescribed in US hospitals are not consistent with guidelines for when and how they should be used. Often, they’re prescribed for longer than is appropriate or without clear evidence of a bacterial infection. And those numbers don’t even count all the antibiotic prescriptions surgeons give patients to take for a week after the procedure, just in case. Debra Goff says doctors, hospitals and, patients all need to play a more active role in addressing the over-use of antibiotics. Goff is a professor of pharmacy who leads antibiotic resistance efforts at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. (Segment produced by Sam Faulconer)
