The average American buys 68 new wardrobe items every year—five times more than what people bought in the 80s. And we throw away a lot more clothing as we make room in our closets for the new stuff. Part of the reason this is happening is that trendy clothes are now produced so quickly and cheaply, and we can buy them with the click of a button. But Dana Thomas says “fast fashion” comes with a huge cost for the planet, economies, and human rights. Thomas is the author of the book “Fashionopolis: The Price of Fast Fashion and the Future of Clothes." (Originally aired: December 2nd, 2020)
