The Eyres are in New York this week, and couldn't resist doing this episode on their love for the city and the important memories they have there--including family history and spiritual memories. From Richard's mission in the 60's to their publishing careers to the education and employment of their children, New York had been central. And those who predicted NYC's demise a year ago are instead seeing a renaissance.

The Eyres, just back from London and the birth of their twin grandchildren, talk on today's show about families in Covid Time, and the joys and trials of staying close mentally and spiritually when you can't be close physically.

Continuing with the "stories" theme of the last few weeks, the Eyres tell us the stories of some of the wild and unusual things they have done with their children during summer vacations. They talk about summers in Japan, in Romania, in Mexico, in Wales, and building a log cabin in the Oregon wilderness. Still in London, awaiting the birth of grand-twins, they also talk about earlier family time in England.

Still in England awaiting the birth of their daughter's twins, Richard and Linda reflect on today's show about Joy School and how it became an international phenomenon. The story actually begins in England where the Eyres were as the initial Joy School curriculum was being formed, and there were some other stories in connection with its beginning that all families, and all parents and grandparents can learn from.

Having completed their quarantine, the Eyres have moved from Somerset up to London to be with their youngest daughter who will deliver twins any day now. Richard and Linda go into story-telling mode and share some of the family centric English incidents that are dear to them and instructive to all of us with regard to our families.

Once again casting from England, the Eyres talk today about their English ancestors, and ancestors in general and how knowing their stories can give us both identity and resilience. Richard and Linda are in the Southwest of England, where many of their ancestors lived, and they are using their time there to harvest all they can about those for-bearers and their lives and times.

Joining us today from the little village of Batheaston, in Somerset, England, Richard and Linda are in quarantine for 14 days, hoping that their splendid isolation will end at about the same time as their youngest daughter gives birth to her twins in London. So how could they talk about anything today other than baby stories--birth stories--those glorious moments when children from a pre-mortal existence enter into this world.

Today, Richard and Linda tell some of their "Book Stories" and get into how they became authors in the first place and how luck or fate (but we would like to call it blessings) led them on a path that resulted in books that sold millions, were translated into more than a dozen languages, and led to a secondary career of speaking and lecturing throughout the world. Their stories illustrate how many "happy accidents" went into their writing career.

Parenting is hard, children are complicated, the world is dangerous and confusing, and we can be driven to our knees because we have nowhere else to go. And this can be a GOOD THING, because an earthly parent praying to a Heavenly Parent about a child that they share can create some of the most fervent prayers ever uttered. On today's show, the Eyres talk about parental prayer and how we can all make it a more important part of our lives.

Is there any time when it is more important to count our blessings than in a pandemic? Sports can often act as metaphors for life, but maybe none more than tennis. Like how it's the only game where the score starts over every few minutes, the game where you have to get to "advantage" before you can win, and the game that keeps score with words like "love" and "deuce" and "serve" and "receive." On today's show, Richard and Linda apply some of these metaphors to marriage and family and raising our children, drawing from Richard's book "Tennis and LIfe."

Controlling our appetites is an indispensable part of good parenting and good example-setting for our children. If we can learn to control our appetite for food, it will lead to control of ALL of our other appetites.

What will the "Autumn" of your life be like? Will the golden years really be golden? With more than 80 million baby boomers all now in their 50's or 60's or early 70's, and with most of them able to expect to live close to or into their 90's, the questions of how to live these Autumn years is more relevant than it has ever been before.

Despite the success of the Eyre's "how-to" parenting books, they felt that it was time for something different--for a "why-to" book on what is happening to families around the world and why family decline is a problem that affects everyone in the world. In two parts they take a hard look at the state of the family, then present ways to save this basic unit of society.

For more than forty years, Richard and Linda have sent out a Thanksgiving Card at the holiday season rather than a Christmas Card. The original cards that go out every November contain the latest family picture and a poem to express their gratitude for the year past. Taken together, these 40 poems and some additional poetry to introduce and lead into them, give a wonderfully in depth picture of what awareness, appreciation, gratitude, and thanks-giving can be.

We used to call this problem "spoiled kids" or "selfish little brats" but today there is a better term to describe what is happening to kids who think they deserve to have everything they want without any work or effort on their part. The word is "Entitlement" and it is becoming a Trap in our society that catches kids in its clutches and squeezes the motivation and incentive right out of them. Today Richard and Linda give advice for parents to sidestep this trap in society.

Since we as adults have such a hard time with charity, we sometimes assume that it is too big a principle for children to learn. But as it turns out, kids can sometimes be better at empathy, sensitivity and charity than we are! The Eyres broadcast today's show from Gilbert, AZ. where they are joined by their daughter Shawni Pothier of the popular blog 71toes.com and they discuss how the Christmas season can be a time to help children think about the concept of charity.

So much of succeeding in life is about balance. Balancing work with family, balancing structure with spontaneity, balancing relationships with achievements. And no one needs to face the challenges of balance more than busy parents who have to think about the needs of their children, of their spouse, of their work, of their bodies, of their church, of their community, often of their ageing parents, and on and on.

Parents can learn from the "best practices" of other families and can establish family systems that make the household run better and more efficiently and that give children a sense of security and consistency. Using their book Mother, Father, and the Family that Worked (available for free at EyresFreeBooks.com), Richard and Linda cover things like "daddy dates," "tutors and tutees," "responsibility pegboards," the "family bank," weekly "family awards," and more.

On today's show, Richard and Linda discuss the gift of agency and the process through which agency can be exercised and developed into freedom. Ever since the War in Heaven, there has been an ongoing battle between false freedom and true freedom. Real freedom is not free, and Richard talks about working for freedom from doubt, from guilt, and from caring too much about what others think.

Today the Eyres talk about the ups and downs, the highs and lows of motherhood. Richard essentially interviews Linda about her book Joyful Mother of Children. There have been three bestselling editions of this classic motherhood book, the first of which was written when Linda and Richard's children were preschoolers and elementary-schoolers, and the last edition when they were teens and college students. Perspective is key in parenthood.

No matter how many good parenting methods and techniques and ideas we have, sometimes the most valuable thing we can have is PERSPECTIVE! This week the Eyres start with that beautiful and sacred moment when we first look into the eternity-eyes of our new infant and feel, somehow, that this is an "old soul" and that what is inside is much greater and more ancient than the genetic creation of our bodies.

This week the Eyres discuss how important Sundays can be in keeping families on track and in helping children learn to set goals and communicate better with siblings and parents. Thinking of the Sabbath not only as a day of rest but as a day of renewal and re-creation can give families a fresh start each week and allow parents and children to "spiritually create" the week ahead before it happens.

This week the Eyres discuss the universal challenge of helping children grow into responsible adults. Many studies show that the single biggest concern of parents worldwide is "Raising Responsible Kids in an Irresponsible World" and Richard and Linda break down the subject into twelve different kinds of responsibility--one each month of the year for parents to focus on.

Studies show that kids who know "where they came from" in terms of their ancestors and their stories are more resilient and secure than kids who don't. Today Richard and Linda focus in on the tenth book they ever wrote, a novel called The Awakening. The book is written as an adventure and a romance, but on a symbolic level it is about the search for identity that we all go through and how we can discover what is most important and make what matters the core of who we are.

This week the Eyres discuss the principles of a book which is directed at fathers and husbands and which attempts to give men four key concepts or words that can be programmed into their minds to form their attitudes and approaches as husbands ("Partner," "Protect," "Patriarch," and "Priority"); and four other principles or word-pegs that can form their approaches to fathering ("Confidence," "Calmness," "Consultant," and "Concentrate").

This week the Eyres discuss their seventh book, called Lifeplanning and candidly admit that they are not happy with everything they wrote in that book. They worry that it suggests that we have more control of our lives than we really do, and wish that they had written more about how important it is to be flexible and to adjust our goals and plans as unexpected opportunities or problems enter our lives. But the core idea of goal-setting and planning is sound.

Many parents opt for early academics, but studies show that this may make them bored when they start school, and that other kids will catch up by age 7 or 8. A better option is to let kids have a real childhood, free from the school pressure that will come soon enough. On today's show, the Eyres talk about their 8th book, Teaching Children Joy, and how it came to be written and how it started Joy Schools, a do-it-yourself preschool that has now been practiced by more than 300,000 families.

The Eyres bring inherit spirituality to their sixth book with a focus centered on Jesus Christ.

How we talk about (and how we think about) death can have a significant impact on our children. Clearly it is easier for people of faith and belief in a hereafter to think positively about death, but with the right mindset, we all can think of death more as a kind of birth and bring a comforting long-range perspective into our families' lives. Today the Eyres talk about the fifth book they wrote, titled, The Birth that We Call Death.

Today the Eyres talk about the subject of goal setting from a family and parenting perspective. Referencing a book they wrote called simply GOALS, they discuss the charting of a life course and the setting of corresponding plans via the sailing analogy of knowing your destination and then setting and trimming the sails in a way that will get you there. Of course it is the wind that propels the sailboat, and it is work that propels us toward our goals.

The third book the Eyres ever wrote was called The Discovery of Joy and it set the tone and the theme for much of their subsequent writing. In today's show, Richard and Linda tell the story behind that book and present the case that the pursuit of the deepest joys can become the foundation of family life and the key to lasting marriages and successful kids.

Today's focus is on their second book, titled RELATIONSHIPS, With Self, With Family, and With God. The prime message of the book is that relationships are more important than achievements and deserve an equal or greater amount of time and mental energy. Those who deliberately change their priorities from achievements to relationships will find ways to improve the one thing that, late in life, everyone wishes they had spent more time and effort on--the key RELATIONSHIPS of their life.

This week's show begins a series by the Eyres on the main concepts from their 50 published books. The first of Linda and Richard's 50 books was published in 1972. It has two front covers, one titled I Challenge You and the other titled I Promise You. A reader can start from the challenge side and read one of the 21 challenges, and then flip the book over to read the corresponding promise that follows the challenge.

FAMILY REUNIONS.... What are they really? Just a time to get together and grill up some food and have a good time? Or are they something more than that? Can they be the glue that holds families together and that makes cousins more than friends? The Eyres share their family reunion experiences and how it has strengthened their family bonds.

If we look at statistics, the prospects of marriage in today's world look pretty bleak. Divorce rates are high, and marriage rates continue to drop while the numbers for cohabitation without marriage continue to rise. But as the Eyres travel the world, they see a counter trend that is much more positive. There has never been a better time to forge a great marriage!

Equality in marriage can sound like a good goal to start with, but can sometimes lead to score-keeping in the house. Relationships are about striving for the same goal together with one purpose where two people can contribute different things. Today the Eyres share how they've been able to complete each other, not compete, in their marriage over the years.

Today the Eyres, broadcasting from London, England, talk about myth #6 from their "8 Myths of Marriaging." Today's myth, known as the "Test Drive Myth", is particularly troublesome because it is based on the false belief that living together for a while before marrying will ultimately make your marriage better and more lasting. The opposite is true. Commitment is necessary in every relationship especially in a marriage and can help you in overcome the hard times that come.

Richard and Linda take a little break from their eight myths of marriage and instead talk whats been on their mind during a trip to Moscow, Russia. Parenting here in Russia is a lot different than most of us are used to. Most families have only one child and instead of entitled children like one would expect, we are seeing entitled parents and grandparents that are thriving off their child's success. Learn how Russian families support one another through their hard work and dedication!

If you believe that 'some things are better left unsaid' then you are dooming yourself to a relationship where 'unexpressed feelings will fester.' Richard and Linda are tackling two myths in one today both relating to making waves in a marriage. The important thing to remember is that there is a right and wrong kind of communication, and most relationships can use more (not less) of that good talking.

Kids are waiting longer and longer before their first marriage. One reason might be waiting for the "perfect" match. Whether your mindset is focused on finding The One, or if you think you can make someone perfect just by working on them, both can cause harm to future relationships. Instead of working on changing the other person, accept that two different people can make a great relationship. And you can always work on being a more perfect person yourself too!

An American audience might prickle at the idea that Independence could ever be a bad thing, but Richard and Linda want to broaden that horizon today. Independence in a marriage is good, but two people coming together to be interdependent on one another can be stronger than the two working individually alone. And it's less lonely. Interdependence is great, but ultimately dependence on a higher power is the final step of unifying a relationship.

After wishing each other Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year for the past couple weeks the Eyres would like to focus on Happiness today, and their new book, all about that subject.

Last week on the show, Richard and Linda shared ideas of how to turn the focus of your holiday season outward. After some great feedback on that episode they'd like to talk more extensively this week on some specific ways to help others, and ways to make it a family effort. Children have a knack for empathy that can surprise you.

Christmas is a special time of the year where we can turn our hearts toward each other. But when young kids are in the picture, it's not always the easiest task to teach giving over getting. Today Richard and Linda share a few experiences from their house about how to refocus Christmas and use it as a turning point to be ready for the New Year.

Richard and Linda are back with tip number 11 in their top ten series on marriage and relationships. It's a bonus tip that they just couldn't leave out. Working for equality in marriage sometimes misses the mark. Instead of worrying about how much each partner is doing, focus on the oneness of having the same goals.

It is easy to get discouraged in the state of marriage. Today is the final tip of Richard and Linda's series on relationships and their ultimate message is to believe. Believe that it can work for yourself and your family on the micro level, and also believe in the institution across the world on the macro level.
