Service animals get lots of specialized training to meet a person’s needs. But at the Safe in Austin sanctuary in Texas, animals help just by being themselves. The sanctuary has chickens, dogs, horses, pigs, goats, cats, bunnies, tortoises, and more—all rescued from severe abuse or neglect. The animals provide healing to children who come from similar backgrounds of abuse, neglect, or special needs. Jamie Wallace Griner is the founder of Safe in Austin.
