BASE Nation (11:48) Dr. David Vine is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at American University in Washington, DC. His writing has appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Guardian, Mother Jones, the Boston Globe, the Huffington Post, the Chronicle of Higher Education, among others. He is the author of Base Nation: How U.S. Military Bases Abroad Harm America and the World. He shares with Dr. Townsend his research into how much money the US spends on military bases around the world. Raising Can-Do Kids (1:08:49) Dr. Richard Rende is a developmental psychologist and research professor at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. His research program focuses on family influences on the development of behavior problems in childhood, adolescence and the transition to adulthood. His work has been supported by the National Institute on Mental Health, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Dr. Rende and Dr. Townsend discuss the book “Raising Can-Do Kids: Giving Children the Tools to Thrive in a Fast-changing World” and how to prepare you kid for the future.  Midlife Crisis (1:44:13) Dr. Schwandt is a postdoctoral research associate at Princeton University’s Center for Health and Wellbeing. He completed his PhD in Economics at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona and the London School of Economics. Dr. Schwandt says, “A mid-career crisis can happen to anyone. It can hit even those who objectively have the most fulfilling jobs.” He will join the University of Zurich as assistant professor of Economics in September 2015. Dr. Schwandt talks about why we have midlife crisis.
