What Trump Means for Undocumented Immigrants Guest: Claudio Holzner, PhD, Professor of Political Science and Associate Director, Center for Latin American Studies, University of Utah Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly are in Mexico today discussing, among other things, the Trump Administrations new immigration enforcement policies announced this week. The changes mean immigration agents will no longer focus primarily on undocumented immigrants who commit serious crimes. Anyone in the country illegally can be detained and deported if they’re charged with even a minor offense, like a traffic violation. So-called “Dreamers” who were brought to the states by their parents as children are, for the moment, still protected under President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA. But if one of the 750,000 people who’ve been granted that status does something criminal or is found to have gang affiliation, they can be deported, too. Trump’s new policies also call for enlisting more local authorities to enforce immigration law and jailing more people who cross the border illegally, rather than allowing them to go free while they wait for a hearing to determine their eligibility for asylum. There’s also a plan afoot to send border crossers immediately back to Mexico to wait out the immigration process – even if they’re from another country and just came through Mexico to get to the US border. That last proposal is something Mexican officials say they won’t stand for.  Play-by-Play Sports Announcer  Guest: Greg Wrubell, Voice of the Cougars, Radio play-by-play for football, basketball and soccer College basketball season is winding down, and teams have their eyes on the playoffs. Wherever BYU ends up, one thing is certain: sports announcer Greg Wrubell will be there to bring the game to life for Cougar fans listening by radio. American Gut Project Guest: Rob Knight, Professor at UCSD, Co-Founder of the American Gut Project We think a lot about heart health or mental health – but how often do we consider the health of our gut? Our next guest says it – specifically the bacteria that thrive there – is like a forgotten organ in the body – and it has an outsized impact on our well-being. Gut bacteria influence body weight, allergies, even the way we respond to medication.   Amazon Go Guest: Brent Franson, CEO of Euclid Analytics Now that Amazon has gotten us all hooked on the online, two-day delivery shopping experience, it’s going old-school with a small bricks-and-mortar store in Seattle. But there’s a technical twist, of course. AmazonGo is a convenience store stocked with perishable items. You load an app on your phone and then you walk into the store, pick up what you want and walk out. No waiting in lines, no checkout counters, no swiping a credit card. Just grab and go, and the total is charged to your Amazon account. Right now the AmazonGo store in Seattle is only open to Amazon employees, but the company says it’ll open to the public in the coming months.  Opiate Withdrawals Among Babies in Rural Areas Guest: Nicole Villapiano, MD, Pediatrician, Clinical Lecturer, University of Michigan As opioid abuse has reached epidemic proportions in America, the rate of so-called “heroin babies” born in both cities and rural areas has increased nearly five-fold. But rural areas, in particular have seen a much larger jump, as documented in a recent issue of JAMA Pediatrics.
