Guest: Carla Van Dam, PhD, Clinical and Forensic Psychologist, Author of “Identifying Child Molesters: Preventing Child Sexual Abuse by Recognizing the Patterns of the Offenders” and “The Socially Skilled Child Molester: Differentiating the Guilty From the Falsely Accused” Former Michigan State and USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar was sentenced last week to up to 175 years in prison after more than 150 women and girls said in court that he sexually molested them over the span of decades, and under the guise of medical treatment. Among the many horrifying details of the case is that the abuse sometimes happened while the girl’s parent was in the exam room, but couldn’t see what was going on, or trusted that the doctor was just doing what was necessary for treatment. The idea that something so horrible could happen at the hands of a well-respected doctor, and in the presence of parents sent us looking for expert insight on identifying and preventing such abuse.
