Control of the National Bison Range’s Herd Returned to Native TribesTop of Mind with Julie Rose • Season 1, Episode 1715, Segment 3
Oct 22, 2021 • 18m
Though bison used to roam North America in huge numbers, most of them now live in national parks and reserves. The National Bison Range in Montana is home to one of the most controversial bison herds because the land they roam on was carved out of the middle of the Flathead Reservation and placed under government control a century ago. Now, Congress has transferred the management of the range back to the tribes on that reservation. Rich Janssen Jr. is head of Natural Resources for the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes on the Flathead Reservation. His office will now oversee the National Bison Range.
