Compared to boys, girls in the US are far less likely to be diagnosed with autism. When they are diagnosed, girls often have different symptoms–and not just that. The neural activity in the brains of boys and girls with autism is different. So are the genetic markers of their condition. Autism spectrum disorder seems to be a fundamentally different disorder in boys and girls. Understanding these differences has been the focus of Kevin Pelphrey’s career. He’s a professor of neurology at the University of Virginia Brain Institute. (Segment produced by Haley Kendall)
