People used to secure their correspondence with fancy folding, though those techniques were lost when cheap envelopes became widely available in the mid-1800s. MIT Libraries conservator Jana Dambrogio leads a team that’s unlocking the secrets of letter locking by using X-ray scanning and algorithms to read the locked letters and see exactly how they’re folded.
