Buster

We always hope that the stories we share with you on The Apple Seed spark memories for you to share with the people that you love. Sometimes those memories are sparked by listening to personal stories, and other times by listening to tall tales and fairy tales. So sit back, relax, and get ready to have the memories wash over you as you listen to stories about dogs, frogs, and possums. On today’s episode, enjoy the following: "Buster" by Fran Yardley from The Sears Roebuck Baby (10:07)  Fran Yardley is a writer, actor, and nationally known storyteller and workshop leader. This first tale called "Buster" may seem a little grim at first, but we promise everything turns out okay for the titular dog. Just remember - this is a tall tale, so you should certainly take it with a grain of salt.  "The Dog Who Paid Cash” by Bill Mooney from Half Horse, Half Alligator (5:11) Bill Mooney, who for many years was a television actor and also has a lot of miles behind him as an onstage storyteller, created a show filled with stories filled with stories told by the characters who inhabit a saloon at the end of the 19th Century. One of those stories is from a guy who talks about a dog he knew. A dog who paid cash.  "Kihapiilani" by Marie Solomon from Old Hawaii (4:21)  Here's a Hawaiian story from Marie Solomon that you'll love. It's a story about a prince named Kihapiilani. But in addition to the story about the prince you'll also get a sense of the storytelling culture in the family where Marie learned this story - all of them sitting down together to listen to stories from Grandfather in the evening.  "The War Party (Lakota-Dakota)" by Dovie Thomason from Voices of the Animal People (10:09) This next story is from the wonderful teller, Dovie Thomason. Its a story about the war party organized against the humans...by turtle. You're sure to enjoy it.  "Brer Possum & the Frogs" by Donna Washington from Troubling Trouble (15:19) Up next an old tale called "Brer Possum and the Frogs". There are a lot of versions of this 'Brer' (short for 'brother') tale. This one's from Apple Seed-favorite, Donna Washington. And it's a real pleasure for us to bring it to you.  Radio Family Journal: "Old Pete" (5:30) Hearing so many dog tales today puts Sam in mind of dogs that he's known and loved throughout his life.
