As the days grow shorter and the weather gets greyer, you might also find yourself getting a little gloomier. If change in seasons is leaving you feeling sluggish and lethargic, you might be experiencing Seasonal Affective Disorder, or (as it’s appropriately nicknamed) S.A.D—and you’re not alone. SAD affects about 10 million Americans and another 10-20% are estimated to experience it mildly. And since most of those 10 million Americans don’t happen to live in states that don’t experience winter (I’m looking at you Southern California and Florida), how can they mitigate it? Here to talk with us about SAD and what we can do to reduce its effects is licensed Clinical Psychologist and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University, Dr. Claire Nicogossian.
