In the UK, gardeners and backyard metal detectors routinely find historic artifacts worth a lot, like medieval weapons or gold coins. Last year—when so many people were stuck at home with only their yards to rummage around in—more than 47,000 artifacts turned up. Archaeologist Michael Lewis heads the program in the UK that registers these historic treasures uncovered by amateurs called the Portable Antiquities Scheme.
