It’s been a long journey to get to the knowledge we have now that COVID-19 is spread by aerosols—respiratory particles that float in the air. The CDC and World Health Organization updated their websites a few months ago to include aerosols as one of the ways the virus spreads. Just last year, the WHO vehemently denied that. Why the change? University of Colorado Boulder chemist Jose-Luis Jimenez says there’s a long history of experts denying aerosols. He believes they’re still making the same mistake with other viruses.
