The US government has designated hundreds of places all over the country “superfund” sites—meaning they’re so contaminated with hazardous waste that cleaning them up is a national priority. Such sites might be landfills, manufacturing plants, or mines. University of Houston professor of environmental engineering Hanadi Rifai found that living near a superfund site can shorten your life by as much as a year.
