Summer Reading

18 MINS

For a lot of kids around the country, this month marked the end of school and the start of summer vacation. To these kids, summer means staying up late, sleeping in, watching TV, and most of all, not doing any school work. But a recent study shows that kids lose an average of 2-3 months of reading skills during the summer, severely setting them back before the start of the next school year. So how can we help our kids read during their time off? To get some advice, we’re joined by literacy expert Timothy Shanahan.

Literacy starts in the home, and has the potential to become a generational tradition. Because our parents taught us to be passionate about books, we teach our children, and then our children go on to teach future generations. It can become a wonderful cycle, but it requires work to make reading an important center in the home. We’re in studio today with Kathy Newton, a mother, grandmother, and lover of reading.
