Lisa’s Adventure Club: Solo Traveling (0:00:00) On this week’s Adventure Club, we want to talk about how to become a “solo traveler.” Traveling solo might seem daunting or lonely. But, it can be a wonderful experience where you can make great memories and friends along the way. Joining us to discuss how to plan our next solo trip the benefits of traveling alone is self-proclaimed “solo traveler” Tracey Nesbit of solotravelerworld.com. The Effects of Helping the Poor (0:14:55) Poverty is a huge problem in our world, and its effects go so much deeper than many of us realize. Recently, Stanford economist Raj Chetty did a group experiment which proved that children who come from an affluent background are TEN times more likely to go on to become inventors than children from lower income groups. One neurologist-turned-law professor, Stephanie Plamondon Bair, heard about this and decided to change it. We’ve invited her onto the show today to talk about her plans for the future and how we can help. Eating Disorder Awareness (0:32:52) Have you or someone you know ever dealt with an eating disorder? This week is Eating Disorder Awareness Week, and we want to help people know that they are not struggling alone, and that there is a light at the end of whatever tunnel you may be passing through. That’s why we have invited a friend of the show, Ciara Hulet, who works with us here at BYU Radio, to discuss her own journey recovering from an eating disorder. Ciara, thank you for being here and for being so willing to open up about such a sensitive subject. If you or someone you love is struggling with an eating disorder, you can go to nationaleatingdisorders.org andn contact the helpline to get help. Representation in Media (0:50:36) Whether it’s in your favorite book, movie or TV show, there’s something so empowering about seeing a character that you identify with or aspire to be like. But for many kids of color, that moment is rare. In recent years we’ve seen the media attempt to be more inclusive with films like Disney’s Princess and the Frog and Black Panther. But there’s still room for improvement. We’ve loved celebrating black artists, authors and history this month for black history month. So, to continue the conversation we’ve invited author and professor Ebony Thomas to discuss black representation in media. Mini Book Club: Global Reads (1:07:55) Rachel Wadham, of BYU Radio's Worlds Awaiting, talks to Lisa and Richie about the best international books to read. Prepping Your Lawn for Spring (1:25:44) The groundhog predicted an early spring so it’s time to start prepping our yards for the changing weather. The winter can leave your grass, shrubs and trees weak after months of lying dormant under a blanket of ice and snow. Spring lawn preparation now will help ensure a beautiful lawn during the warmer months. Here to help make that possible is Kevin Maryott, the retail director at Mccoards Garden center. We’re going to talk with Kevin about the steps we should take to prepare our lawns for the spring!
