Bridle Up Hope (0:00:00) Being a girl in this world can feel like you’re in a constant battle with impossible expectations. Remember middle school and high school when you felt like you had to be pretty, popular, athletic, skinny, and smart all at the same time? Well it’s not like the expectations change as we grow into adulthood. If we don’t dig ourselves out of the depths of comparison and expectations, it festers into deeper self-worth challenges when we’re grown women. So where do we find respite? Today we are joined by Michael Sean Covey who is going to tell us a unique way we may be able to regain that self-worth. Michael is the Executive Director of Bridle Up Hope, an organization that uses equestrian horse riding to help inspire hope, confidence, and resilience in young women. Pumpkin House (0:14:21) Have you ever carved a pumpkin before? You have to scoop out the seeds and decide on something to carve and then draw the pattern on before you actually start carving. It’s a lot of work. Can you imagine carving THREE THOUSAND pumpkins to decorate just one house? Ric Griffith does just that. Of coursehe doesn’t carve all the pumpkins himself, but it’s still quite the task. Ric joins us today to talk about his experience owning and running The Pumpkin House in West Virginia. SureCall Cell Phone Study (0:33:33) When was the last time you had a conversation that wasn’t interrupted by a text, phone call, or other notification on your cell phone? What about the last time you went more than a few hours without checking your feed? Electronics company, SureCall, recently conducted a study on how Americans are being affected by their smartphone habits. Frankie Smith from SureCall joins us today to talk about the findings of their study, as well as how we can find a balance in our cell phone consumption. Fire Prevention (0:50:33) When faced with an emergency like this, it’s normal for us to want to save our favorite items--but really, safety should be the number one priority. In a typical house fire, you only have around 2 minutes to get out safely. But then what? Where do you go? Do you and your family have an escape plan? Today for National Fire Prevention Week, we’ve got Lisa Braxton of the National Fire Protection Association to give us tips to make sure we’re prepared for fires. Fitness to Live (1:02:51) Imagine living with a condition that causes your stomach to be paralyzed. Imagine being in pain with it all the timeand having your stomach reject everything you eat. Gastroparesis is a condition that does just that to your body. Dempsey Marks was diagnosed with this condition at the age of 18. After countless medications and other treatments, she found that fitness helped her very most. She says to, “stay positive, never give up, be compassionate, be caring, and be your own medical advocate.” We have Dempsey with us today to tell us a little bit more about her medical journey and how fitness helped. Glad You Asked (1:20:11) Have you ever wondered why you cry? Or if you could survive on Mars? We all have burning questions like these but we might not have the means to answer them. Joss Fong and Alex Clark are two of the four hosts on Vox.com’s new YouTube series, “Glad You Asked” where they take on some of youtube’s most popular questions. They are with us to tell us what we can expect from this unique series.
