Michael's Desserts (0:00:00) Michael Platt started his bakery “Michaels Desserts” when he was 11. That was two years ago. For every cupcake or cookie he sells, he donates one to someone in need. "A cupcake won’t end hunger," Michael admits on his website. But “a tasty treat, when times are tough, can make life sweeter." He and his mom join us to talk about their story. Boomerang Kids (0:16:54) In today’s society approximately 32 percent of adults aged 18-34 have moved back in with their parents. This group of young adults is referred to as the “Boomerang generation”. There are many factors leading to an adult child’s return home however, what we need to do is prepare to be supportive parents so that our kids can feel confident to get back out on their own. Family finance expert, Ellie Kay, is with us today to explain more about the “boomerang generation” and to teach us how we can best support them. Finding Local Concerts (0:28:11) The weekend rolls around and you’ve seen every movie in the theatre and walked through all of the shops in town. You want to discover something new and exciting to do, but you don’t how to go about finding anything. Bryce Taylor, a family man, college professor and singer and guitarist for rock band Noble Bodies joins us to help us know how to discover your local music scene and how to enjoy it with your friends and family. Developing Your Inner Leader (0:50:37) We tend to define success as directly tied to the financial aspects of life. If you make a lot of money, drive the right car, or have an impressive home you are successful—right? Well, maybe. But those things don’t provide something deeper that might be even more important—a sense of meaning. How can we find meaning in work and life? How can we lead ourselves? Here to tell us about the answer that he’s found to these questions is Dr. Benjamin Ritter, founder of Live for Yourself Consulting. Success in Elementary School (1:06:30) We all stress about our high school kids’ grades and our college kids graduation because we want them to do well in the ‘real world.’ But do we give much thought to elementary school? What if the impact of their future success starts much earlier than high school. If that is the case, how can we make the elementary years meaningful for them? Darryl Webster is an award winning school social worker with 25-years of experience with District of Columbia Public Schools. He joins us to talk about the impact the elementary years will have on our children’s success. Stop the Chore Wars (1:24:18) We’ve all experienced it. It probably started with your siblings, fighting over whose turn it was to mow thelawn, then it continued into college when you were the only roommate who ever washed the dishes, and now it’s come full circle into marriage. Someone always feels they are doing more work or getsthe more difficult chores... but maintaining a clean home should be something that strengthens a couple, not divides. So, what’s the best way to delegate responsibilities without causing conflict? Marriage success coach, Lesli Doares, is with us this morning. She’s going to tell us how we can overcome what she calls the “chore wars."
