A few months ago, headlines warned that people who eat a “Southern diet” are a lot more likely to die of sudden heart failure than are people who eat a “Mediterranean diet.” The researchers defined a Southern diet as high in fried food, added fat, processed meats, and drinks. In contrast, a Mediterranean diet is all about fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, and legumes. The headlines bothered food writer Shaun Chavis, who grew up in the South and owns a company that focuses on giving people healthy food options that fit their culture.
