Over fifty years ago, the White House held a conference to deal with a crisis of hunger in America. Out of that meeting came most of the anti-hunger programs we have –from food stamps to school lunch. But today, Americans who benefit from those programs are at highest risk for obesity and diabetes. Why have anti-hunger programs not led to better health? Cardiologist Dariush Mozaffarian is dean of the School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. He co-authored an opinion in the Journal of the American Medical Association calling for a focus on nutrition insecurity instead of food insecurity.
