Nellie Bly famously got herself committed to an insane asylum to uncover abuse there. This type of covert reporting by female reporters was denigrated as a "stunt," but it led to real change. Sometimes successful, sometimes dismissed as sensational, these women opened up journalism to other women and made discoveries that their male counterparts never could have.
