It’s estimated that there are thousands of women currently in US prisons for killing their abusers. Many of these women weren’t able to claim self-defense at trial because the court wouldn’t consider any evidence of the abuse they had suffered. California has now passed laws that allow women in those cases to have their sentences reconsidered. About ninety have been freed as a result. But then what? A nonprofit in California called Five Keys has just opened a small apartment complex specifically for these women to transition back into society. It’s called Home Free and Sunny Schwartz is the founder. She’s also a lawyer and long-time criminal justice reform advocate. (Segment produced by Olivia Young)
