Throughout the earliest stages of American history, brown bears symbolized strength, danger, and western expansion. Indigenous peoples feared them, vaqueros captured them, and gold prospectors eventually drove some of them to extinction. Although human encroachment and intrigue of bears continues today, maybe it’s time to recognize the truth: they’d be happiest if we stayed out.
