On a warm summer’s night in August of 1877, Asaph Hall was looking through a telescope at the Naval Observatory in Washington, DC and found two moons flying around Mars. He was working at the US Naval Observatory, the site of many discoveries in astronomy.  Since 1830, the Naval Observatory has been keeping the time of day for the country. Its mission began out of a need for accurate time-keeping tools for naval navigation and today is the home to the clock that makes the internet function. Without this facility you probably wouldn’t be able to turn on your phone and get directions to the nearest Walmart. The Naval Observatory was a favorite haunt of President Abraham Lincoln, even once at 2 am!
