In this hour os stories, music, and conversation, we'll explore Faustian tales -- tales about deals with the Devil. We'll begin wiht a memory of Sam's, captured in a Radio Famly Journal entry about a "gang" he had with his brother and a couple of pals when they were in fourth grade. We'll also head to Ogden, Utah, where the NEXT ensemble is working to establish a chamber music scene in local restaurants, bars, and nightclubs (we'll hear them perform Stravinsky's "The Soldier's Tale," about a soldier who trades his violin to the Devil for a book that tells the future). We'll also read "The Smith Verholen" from "Christmas Tales of Flanders," in which a smith performs a kindly deed and winds up with three wishes that, in the end, help him best the devil in a Faustian bargain. Finally, we'll hear Ryan Shupe and the Rubberband, with a barn-burner of a live performance of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." There's lots to enjoy in this hour, brought to you by The Apple Seed.
