Seven months after a military coup in Myanmar, there is still strong public resistance to the takeover. Protestors have often been seen raising three fingers in a salute initially inspired by The Hunger Games. It’s also the Boy Scout salute, incidentally. But “The Hunger Games” turned it into a symbol popular with pro-democracy protests. It’s been used widely in Thailand, Hong Kong and Myanmar. Annie Hui studies how pop culture symbols like this end up in social movements. Hui is a student fellow and graduate lecturer of global and cultural studies at George Mason University.
