A third of the most sensitive tropical forests at risk for deforestation are owned, managed, or occupied by Indigenous and local communities. Sometimes the illegal logging is done by those Indigenous communities. But opening health clinics could actually reduce unlawful logging in some of those forests. Stanford Wood Institute senior research scientist Susanne Sokolow explains why.
