More than one billion children live in urban areas worldwide, according to UNICEF— unfortunately, however, an urban childhood is limiting because there are so few safe spaces for children to play in cities. But what if we started building cities with the children in mind? Child-friendly urban design gives children better opportunities to play, learn, and grow in ways that are helpful to their development. Tim Gill is a children’s play researcher and author of “Urban Playground: How Child-Friendly Planning and Design Can Save Cities.” He’s also the former director of the Children’s Play Council in England.
