Teaching 9/11
September 11th is and will always be a heavy day for Americans. For school teachers, it poses a particular challenge. How can they observe the anniversary in a way that’s meaningful for students, but doesn’t create trauma? American University professor Amaarah DeCuir’s research finds that well-meaning school activities commemorating 9/11 often lead to bullying and insults aimed at Muslim students. DeCuir lectures in the school of education at American University and is developing resources for teaching 9/11 in K-12 classrooms. (AP Photo/Richard Drew)

I Survived 9/11
What do the terror attacks on September 11th mean to kids who weren’t alive that day? Lauren Tarshis is one of the few authors who’ve attempted to tell the story of that day for kids. She writes the “I Survived” series, which places a fictional child at the center of a historic trauma. “I Survived the Bombing of Pearl Harbor” and “I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic” are examples. Her book “I Survived the Attacks of September 11, 2001” has now been adapted into a graphic novel for kids.

Wedding Frenzy
All the couples who postponed weddings last year because of the pandemic were thinking the summer of 2021 would be a safe bet. But their plans collided with the new couples also planning on a 2021 wedding and competing for the same venues. And then came this new surge in COVID cases. We get an update on these unusual circumstances from wedding planner Britt Warnick. (Segment produced by Lynsey Call)

Science of Spirituality
Depression and anxiety are increasing among us, and a large percentage of people get no lasting relief from standard treatment, either medication or therapy. What if the answer is in our brains? Psychologist Lisa Miller has come to believe that spirituality is the brain’s natural shield against depression and anxiety, and she’s got the scientific evidence to back that up. Miller is a professor of clinical psychology at Columbia University and director of the Spirituality Mind Body Institute at Columbia Teachers College. Her new book is “The Awakened Brain: The New Science of Spirituality and Our Quest for an Inspired Life.”
