With the prevalence of media and the internet today, many of us have developed parasocial relationships without even realizing it. Think of your favorite character from a book or television show. If they died, you’d probably be pretty upset, right? It might even feel like you’ve lost a friend. It’s easy to feel like we’ve formed a connection to these characters, even though we know they’re not real. These connections are called parasocial relationships, and today we’re joined by Dr. Jaye Derrick from the University of Houston to learn all about them.

Give Back Box
We have seen online companies and shipping directly to home change our world in so many ways. You can see something you want online and expect to see it at your door the next day! But with all of the conveniences of online shopping and free shipping, there are some downsides. Many packages and boxes you receive are so much larger than necessary and there can be a lot of waste involved. Even the items themselves can become wasteful if they don’t work for you. But what is the solution where you can still enjoy your online shopping, but give back to? That’s where Give Back Box comes in, a nonprofit organization founded by Monika Wiela. Monika started the organization back in 2012 to provide an effortless and convenient method of donating your used household items. Give Back Box not only provides an easy way to be part of a truly good cause, it gives a secondary use to these boxes and guarantees they will be recycled. Today we are talking with her to learn more about how Give Back Box works and how people can get involved.

Healthcare Wearables
When you think of technology, you typically don’t think of ways that it can benefit your health. However, health and technology actually go hand in hand. Most of us have apps or smartwatches that we use to monitor our habits and set goals for our health, but what technological advances are being made in the healthcare field? What healthcare wearables are out there, and what can they do for us? Here to answer all these questions and more is Dr. Mary Ann Leavitt, who is currently researching the development of wearable sensors for patients with heart failure.

Podcasts for Kids
Let’s be honest –if you’re listening to a morning radio show (and THANK YOU for listening) you’re also a fan of podcasts. And for good reason –they get you invested in new ideas and interests, they’re great for your attention span, and they can just be fun to listen to. But there’s no reason that podcasts have to be only for adults –you can get your kids in on the fun, too! Podcasts for kids are becoming more and more popular, and as a parent, it can help to know a little more about this rising trend. Here to tell us all about it is Maggie McGuire, a podcast creator for kids and an advocate for the adventures that they offer. Thanks for joining us, Maggie!

Making Mistakes
When was the last time you bit into a sweet, warm, and gooey chocolate chip cookie? I can imagine that your first thought when you took a bite was probably, “Wow, I’m in heaven! This is delicious,” and not, “Wow, I’m so glad someone failed.” Ruth Wakefield invented chocolate chip cookies on accident when experimenting with cookie recipes. The result of chocolate in cookies was nothing like what she was trying to accomplish, and yet that failure was the birth of what is arguably the best cookie in the world. So what can we learn from Ruth’s example? How can we learn how to embrace our mistakes as learning moments on our path to success? With us today is motivational speaker Ganel-Lyn Condie to teach us how to embrace making mistakes.
