In the largest round of mass arrests since China instituted a new law in Hong Kong over the summer aimed at silencing dissent, police last Wednesday raided the homes of and arrested more than 50 former lawmakers and activists involved in the pro-democracy movement there. Most were released on bail. Peter Hamilton is our guest and a professor of modern Chinese history at Trinity College Dublin.
