S2 E41: Storyteller Robert B. Jones + A Holiday Chekhov Story

On today's episode of The Apple Seed, we are excited to bring you stories all about connecting with others. We believe the power of stories can bring people together no matter how different we may seem on the outside. There is always something more we can learn about those around us, and all it takes is a story to bring it out. Today's stories feature all kinds of people connecting with their loved ones. Robert B. Jones tells us of a storyteller who inspired him to be the singer/storyteller he is today. You'll hear an interview we had with Dr. Danielle Ofri about her experience listening to stories from her patients, and how it has been a benefit for her medical care to them. And finally, we will share with you a reader's theater adaptation of a famous short story by Anton Chekhov, which was performed live in the Apple Seed studio. We are thrilled to share these wonderful stories with you, and we hope they inspire you to connect with the people around you. (3:26) "Song For Great-Grandfather" by Robert B. Jones: All of us have someone in our lives that we look up to. Even great storytellers like Robert B. Jones need someone to inspire them. In this story, Robert B. Jones shares who he looked up to when he began to tell stories. Everyone needs someone to guide them, even if they don't know it. (20:51) Radio Family Journal by Sam Payne: Dreams can be a powerful thing, especially when we share them with those that we love. Whether they are funny, scary, crazy, or serious dreams, they make for a good story to tell our family and friends. In this radio family journal entry, Sam shares a memory about a dream he had growing up about loved ones who had passed on from this life. Even though he wasn't sure what to make of the dream, he knew that the events inside of the dream were important to him. The memory of this dream has stayed with Sam like so many stories do. (28:22) Interview with Dr. Danielle Ofri: Stories can come from all sorts of places--even the places you would least expect them. We had the chance to have a discussion with Dr. Danielle Ofri, who is a primary care physician with a unique form of approaching her work. Dr. Ofri believes that listening to the stories of her patients is beneficial in helping them overcome the many ailments they may be facing. Learning how to sit and listen to her patients has helped Dr. Ofri come to know her patients on a new level and provide them with medical care that help the patients feel understood. We hope this story inspires you to have meaningful conversations with those that you love, and to really get to know those around you. (37:29) A Chekhov Reader's Theater: In 1886, famous writer Anton Chekhov wrote a short story titled "Misery", which tells the story of loss and loneliness in a meaningful way. As we follow this character through his heartbreaking life, we are able to learn the importance of listening to the stories of others. Here at the Apple Seed, we adapted this short story into our own reader's theater to share with our live studio audience, and we are proud to bring it to you now. We hope you enjoy this reader's theater adaptation of Anton Chekhov's "Misery".
