Before Ansel Adams arrived on the scene, Carleton Watkins' photographs of Yosemite motivated Congress to create Yosemite National Park. Prior to that, Watkins and other prominent voices in the West connected the fate of California to that of the North in the Civil War. Yet, by the time of his death, Watkins was forgotten and buried in an unmarked grave.
