How many times have you wanted to vote for an upstart candidate in an election but haven’t because you knew that person wouldn’t win, and you didn’t want to “waste your vote”? There’s a kind of voting system that fixes that problem: ranked-choice voting. It allows voters to rank all the candidates in order of their preference, so if your first choice gets eliminated early, your vote goes to your second choice, and so on. Cities and states have experimented with ranked-choice voting, including New York City's recent mayoral election. Drexel University political scientist Jack Santucci explains how it worked.
