The American Chestnut used to be one of the most common trees in North America. Today, it’s basically extinct because of a fungus. Botanist William Powell has created a genetically modified version of the American Chestnut that resists the deadly fungus. He’s in the process of trying to get approval from the US government to release it into the wild. Powell is a professor of forest science at the State University of New York.
