Month of Phobias: Flying and Claustrophobia (0:00:00) This month we are discussing phobias and what you can do if you are experiencing one of these fears. Today we are going to discuss claustrophobia. Are you afraid of tight spaces? Do elevators, airplanes, and caves ignite a sense of panic in you? You may be claustrophobic. Claustrophobia is an irrational fear of tight and confined spaces, and an estimated 5-10% of the world population is affected by it. Here to help us understand this phobia is Captain Tom Bunn, who helped start the first “fear of flying program.” Tiny Homes Detroit (0:14:30) Tiny homes are cute and cozy and affordable, and people are obsessed with them. So much so that there are even TV shows about tiny homes. But across the country different charities are recognizing that tiny homes can be more than just a cute trend but a realistic option for low-income families and individuals. Cass Community Social Services is one of those charities working to build tiny homes in Detroit. Reverend Faith Fowler, the Executive Director, joins us today to talk about the tiny homes they are building in Detroit. Storing Decorations (0:35:34) You’ll soon be taking down Halloween decorations and getting out your Thanksgiving cornucopias, all while buying Christmas candles. Decorating for the holidays is fun, but keeping everything organized can be both confusing and frustrating. Pam McMurtry, author, artist, and holiday expert joins us today to share how we can best keep our holiday decorations organized, as well as the best ways and times to buy decorations. Connecting with Coworkers (0:50:34) Do you feel like you have friends at work? Do you feel comfortable connecting with your co-workers? There might be something missing in your work place if you aren’t. We’re naturally wired for connection, but in some office and workplace settings we forget this, letting work take the top priority while connection and joy take the back seat. So what can we do to foster connection with our co-workers? Here to talk us through it is Melanie Katzman, author of "Connect First." Overcoming Negative Thinking (1:05:52) Do you ever feel like you just can’t help being negative? Have you ever wondered why we get stuck thinking this way? According to a new study published in the journal JAMA Network Open, optimists are likely to live longer than pessimists, so what can we do to stop thinking negatively? Warren Archer helps people stop thinking negatively so they can achieve lasting happiness. We’ve asked him to come on the show today to help us stop thinking negatively. Mini Book Club: Beginning Readers (1:24:05) Rachel Wadham of BYU Radio's Worlds Awaiting talks about the best books to read if your just starting to read recreationally. Impulse (1:33:15) Are you in need of a new binge worthy sci-fi drama to watch? Youtube’s “Impulse” has been a huge hit with the first episode of season one reaching more than 55 million views. It’s been such a success that they released a second season just this last week. Here to tell us more about this exciting new show is one of its actors, Missi Pyle. Missi is an actress, singer, and up and coming podcaster. You may know her from “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, “Dodgeball”, or “Gone Girl.”
