Are Beavers Contributing to Climate Change? Top of Mind with Julie Rose • Season 1, Episode 1779, Segment 3
May 25, 2022 • 17m
As temperatures in the arctic warm, beavers are moving north from the boreal forests into the Alaskan tundra, where they’re causing all kinds of trouble. Beavers dam rivers –and as they’re doing that on the tundra, they’ve made dozens of new lakes that are flooding the permafrost. Researchers believe that is releasing more greenhouse gases, so the cycle continues. University of Alaska Fairbanks ecologist Ken Tape speaks with us about how the beaver behavior is contributing to climate change. (Segment produced by Sam Faulconer)
