Protests in Myanmar are becoming increasingly deadly after a recent military coup. But the demonstrations continue with many protestors raising three fingers in a salute initially inspired by The Hunger Games books and movies. This symbol has not only been used widely in Myanmar but elsewhere in Asia. Annie Hui–a student fellow and graduate lecturer of global and cultural studies at George Mason University–studies how pop culture symbols like this end up in social movements tackling real-world issues.
