The Apollo 8 mission captured an image of Earth that amazed the billion people watching it on TV at the time: the cratered but barren surface of the moon in the foreground, and the earth in the black sky beyond, nearly half-eclipsed by the shadow of the moon. Referring to this view, Command Modeul Pilot Jim Lovell said, "The vast loneliness is awe-inspiring and it makes you realize just what you have back here on Earth."
