New York Giants tight-end Daniel Fells is currently in a hospital intensive care unit fighting a bacteria infection so severe, it may require the amputation of his foot and end his football career. MRSA, or Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, is bacteria resistant to most antibiotics that treat staph infections. That’s why it’s so dangerous. It’s also a growing threat to patients with open wounds or weakened immune systems in hospitals and nursing homes. While researchers work to find new antibiotics that will fight MRSA, others are turning to alternative ways of tackling the bacteria.
