Sundance and Slamdance are winding down a unique festival season. South of the ski slopes of Robert Redford's hang out is Orem, Utah and this weekend's LDS Film Festival. Jeff, Cole, and Avery caught a few of the new features that are premiering and have reviews today. We also look back at some of the great movies you might have forgot got their start in the festival circuit. Screen Cleaning is pretty indie, you've probably never heard of it.

50 States and 50 Movies: Wild Wild West

A couple Oscars contenders are available this weekend. Jeff, Cole, and Avery review Minari after seeing it in theaters (with popcorn) for the first time in what feels like forever. In addition to being a powerful family drama, it also shows off the beauty of the state of Arkansas. And I can't think of another Arkansas movie. So what is the most iconic movie from each state in the US? Today is part one, tackling everything west of the Mississippi. We know Hollywood loves making movies about Hollywood, and we love talking about them on Screen Cleaning.

This year for Valentine's Day we're looking for love in all the TV places. Sit-coms handle relationships in many different ways and we are pitting some of the most iconic TV couples against each other, bracket style. Ross & Rachel, Sam & Diane, Rosanne & Dan, and what about the platonic couples that exemplify friendship like Ron & Leslie or Jerry & Elaine. We'll crown one of them the greatest as well as reviewing a couple new releases in time for your V-Day date night and as always bring the best from entertainment news of the week. We love you, even when we're on (commercial) break, on Screen Cleaning.

Our media reflects the world we live in. Now we can look back to a time before a pandemic and theaters closing, and wonder what the 2010's said about us. Today Jeff and Cole examine the biggest trends and stories that dominated movies and TV through the most recent decade including franchise filmmaking and an era of prestige television. We watched a lot of movies in those ten years, but there were still a couple that we've been meaning to watch. And as always stick around for the best in entertainment news.
Sure Groundhog Day has been a holiday in Central Pennsylvania for 150 years. And sure time loop stories have been around since Christmas Every Day and 12:01 PM. But when Bill Murray and Harold Ramis teamed up in 1993 they perfected, popularized, and combined the two. Today Jeff and Cole are talking Groundhog Day the movie on this Groundhog Day, and also exploring movies and TV shows that have played with the time travel concept. It's not Déjà vu, it's Screen Cleaning.

The SC Hall of Fame: The Way, Way Back & The Island

Could we have covered more different ground by picking a 2010's indie comedy and a Michael Bay film as our latest two entries into The Screen Cleaning Hall of Fame? Every so often on the show we spend a little more time talking about movies we love, but don't talk enough about. Jeff's selection offers dumb fun chases and sweeping panoramic shots in 2005's The Island. And we say goodbye and good luck to Producer Mickey who brings us The Way, Way Back one of her personal favorites.
THE Christmas Carol

Movies based on books are nothing new, but each version usually adds something new. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens is a classic holiday tale and it's in the public domain, meaning anyone can use the story as a basis for a new movie or Christmas episode of their TV show. There are easily over 50 retellings of the familiar story on the screen including a new three part series on FX this year. Jeff and Cole watched...well, not all of them, but certainly a few. There are good parts and character portrayals in each, so we cobbled our favorites together and present for you - not just A Christmas Carol - but THE Christmas Carol. Marry Christmas from the Screen Cleaning team and God bless us, everyone.

A Hallmark Christmas Special

Stop me if you've heard this one. A big city girl comes back home for the holidays only to be shown the true meaning of Christmas from a handsome boy in flannel. Hallmark movies have a bad reputation, and sure some of them can be really similar, but today we are going to celebrate them. Sometimes after a long year, a relaxing predictable story where everything works out in the end is all you need. Merry Christmas from Screen Cleaning!

Feel Great Movies

It's been a long year and as we look forward to the Christmas season and finally turning that calendar page we realized we could all use a little pick me up. What ever's got you down, we can look to the movies to pick us back up. These are the underdog stories, testaments to the human will, and just fun feel good times. Also we react to the big theater news that Warner Brothers movies will go to HBO Max along with theaters in the new year, and review a new kids movie The Croods 2. James Brown had it right, we feel good, here on Screen Cleaning.

The SC Hall of Fame: Breach & Matchstick Men

We hope you're enjoying your Thanksgiving weekend. Cole has some time off, but we're thankful for Rod Gustafson coming on the show to share one of his favorite films. Today is another edition of the Screen Cleaning Hall of Fame where we shine our spotlight on movies that we don't spend enough time talking about. Some are underrated or forgotten or just movies we love that we don't talk about every other week on the show. Today Jeff and Rod gush over Matchstick Men and Breach. Hope we don't have to con you into watching these thrillers.

Which Movie Characters are You Inviting to Thanksgiving Dinner?

Thanksgivings this year are going to be more virtual than ever. Maybe you can't have all your family around the table like normal, and so we're filling up that guest list with fictional characters from film and tv. And what would the turkey holiday be without food! We stuffed our menu (and our bellies) with the most scrumdiddlyumptious fictional food too. Also stay tuned for the best of entertainment news and reviews of Jingle Jangle and The Queen's Gambit on Netflix. We're thankful for movies and for all of you listeners here on Screen Cleaning.

New Media is Nothing to be Scared of

It seems like only yesterday that Netflix was disrupting the video rental world and now there are new streaming services every day trying to disrupt Netflix. And what about all the other ways the younger generation watches their media? Today the Screen Cleaning crew is focused on the small screens in our pockets. What do parents need to know about TikTok, Twitch, and YouTube. New movies are still being released and Jeff will review Let Him Go.

Happy Spooktober: Does Old Horror Hold Up

Spooktober has reached Part Three. If we were really committed to the bit, we would have done it in 3D like all the great horror franchises. But we are finally talking about scary movies after covering books and theater. Which scary movies? All the scary movies. It’s a history of horror as we (slowly, never running) make our way through all the eras of the genre from creature features, to slashers, to found footage always asking the question; in 2020, does this hold up? Happy Halloween from Screen Cleaning!

When Halloween is over, we'll be cleansing our media palate with some good old fashion sit-coms. You can vote for your favorites here:

Happy Spooktober: Musical Mystery Theater

There are lots of ways to enjoy the scary season and we're exploring them all month long on Screen Cleaning. Last week was books and this week we're going to the theatre. Murder Mysteries and gothic adaptations are on stages near us. We also talk to the co-founder of the Hale Center Theater in Sandy, UT Sally Dietlein about how the live experience has adapted due to the ongoing pandemic. Broadway is still closed and when it comes back it will be without a creepy favorite that made its way from the screen to the stage, Beetlejuice, but producer Mickey caught it before it closed its doors. Then we'll chat about other scary musicals. Boo! This is week two of Scream Cleaning.

Happy Spooktober: Scary Books

This October on Screen Cleaning we're looking beyond our usual fare of TV and movies to see how else people find their scares. Today it's Screen Cleaning Book Club as Jeff, Cole, and Mickey spent the week reading Henry James' classic "The Turn of the Screw". The Haunting of Bly Manor is out this week on Netflix, so we each watched a different on screen adaptation of the old book. Then take a look at other horror books to movies through the years. And don't miss Rod Gustafson to help catch up and review the movies you might have missed coming to streaming in the past month. Boo! We're scary all month long on Screen Cleaning.

It's almost bracket time again on Screen Cleaning! When October is over, we'll be cleansing the palate with some of our favorite sit-coms of all time. You know the drill, click the link, pick your favorites, enter to win!

Movies We Should Like (But Don't)

There's more to a movie than its cast and script. Our favorite movies just work, and you can't put a finger on why. Unfortunately, the opposite is true too. Sometime a film will come out with everything going for it; great reviews and great people working on it, but it just didn't click. Those are the oddities we are focusing on today. We really \*should\* like these, but we don't. Sometimes the circumstances around a movie cause this phenomenon and it's not the movie's fault. In that case it deserves a second chance and Jeff and Cole take another look at a couple of those today. A close cousin to movies we should like, are the ones that come out that we want to like. You've got a hundred other shows where we talk about movies we love, here's one where we talk about ones we don't. Only the best (okay today worst) on Screen Cleaning.

The Disney live action remakes are really only multi-million dollar versions of the internet photoshopping Chris Pratt to look like Hercules, which we're behind by the way. We have a smaller budget though, so today we just talk about what if some of the biggest and most beloved movies of all time came out today. Who would play the Wonderful Wizard of Oz or who are 2020's Good, Bad, and Ugly?

Last week on the show we recast new movies with actors from previous eras, today on Recasting Part Two, we do the reverse. You can check out Part One here: http://www.byuradio.org/episode/3351b761-1018-4858-8f0c-381344f6a719/screen-cleaning-recasting-favorite-movies-pt-1

Recasting Favorite Movies Pt. 1

Reboots and remakes are nothing new in the movie game. And as much as we lament every time another of our favorites is resurrected for a cash grab, it also gets our imaginations churning. This week and next week Jeff and Cole will be taking some of their most beloved movies from different eras and remaking them with actors from a different time. What would a 90's Avengers look like or The Fast and the Furious in the golden age of Hollywood? Also movies are returning to theaters today and we've got Rod Gustafson joining to catch up reviewing all the new releases like The One and Only Ivan, Words on Bathroom Walls, and Boys State. Our podcast cast is perfect, no recasting needed, on Screen Cleaning.

The 2020 Summer Box Office That Never Was

This is the time of the year when we would normally be wrapping up the Summer Box Office that was, but 2020 is definitely not a normal year. Jeff and Cole still wanted an excuse to talk about movies though so step into this alternate timeline where we spent the summer at the theaters instead of on our couch. What would the top grossing movie of Summer 2020 have been, and in case you weren't keeping track, what was the top grossing movie of this unique year in the real world? Questions only answered on Screen Cleaning.

Every week we try to dig a little deeper for the best in the entertainment world. Today the whole show is about obscure movies you may not be familiar with, but you should be. Why doesn't a certain film connect with audiences or how does it slip through the cracks? We'll try to find out on Screen Cleaning.

Sports!

Sports are back on the screens! In honor of the slightly late Major League Baseball Opening Day, Jeff and Cole are talking baseball movies today. Although they disagree on their favorite sport to watch, and which sports movies are the best, and just about everything, they do come together that Baseball has the most hits, and deepest bench. So with all these movies to watch, they curated the best of each movie with an All-Star lineup. If you had to field a team made up of players from baseball movies, who's starting in your right field and who's pitching? Or would you have Who on first? While you can't go out to the ball game or out to the crowd, stay in and watch some great baseball movies with Screen Cleaning.

Here We Stream Again

NBC is the latest network to throw their hat into the streaming ring with The Peacock launching this week. Is it worth it (probably, it's free after all), what does it offer, and what do you need to know? Without theatrical releases, the biggest movies this year have debuted on these streaming platforms. Film critic veteran Rod Gustafson is on the progam today to help us catch up on some of the movies we've missed the past couple weeks including Greyhound on Apple TV+, Hamilton on Disney+, My Spy on Amazon Prime, and more. We never cross the streams here on Screen Cleaning.

Great Years in Movies

2020 hasn’t been a great year. Across the board really, but for movies included. So today Jeff and Cole are escaping to better times remembering some of the greatest years in Hollywood history. 1939 has the classics, 1975 thrilled us with blockbusters, and 1999 redefined genres. Individual actors have found their moment in specific years as well. Just this past Oscars Scarlett Johansson was nominated for two different performances (on top of turning in one of the most powerful performances in the biggest movie of all time, Avengers: Endgame). We'll look at other actors that had it all come together at the right time. It's only halfway done, but already looking forward to 2021 at the movies, here on Screen Cleaning.

The Screen Cleaning Hall of Fame

Every week on the Screen Cleaning podcast Jeff Simpson and Cole Wissinger talk about good movies, TV, video games, music...but mainly movies. Sometimes in a rush to talk about everything, we don’t get to really spend time on some of our favorites. Today we are going to fix that. It’s our first induction ceremony for The Screen Cleaning Hall of Fame. Two good movies we’d be happy to display on the shelf and that we’re always excited to talk about. Welcome to the SC Family Spider-Man 2 & Lars and the Real Girl.

Superior Sequels

What makes a great sequel anyway. You have to raise the stakes, have a more iconic setting, grow the cast (and bring in a few big name stars). Same adventure but BIGGER. At least that's what Hollywood seems to think. Today Jeff and Cole are talking about the rare sequels that surpass their originals. It can be anything from a slow starting franchise to a classic followed up by another amazing entry. And even if the movie wasn't great, sometimes the marketing is good enough to make a ton of money, and we'll take a look at some of the greatest taglines from not-so-great sequels.

Remakes need not apply, we already covered superior remakes in a previous episode. You can check it out at https://www.byuradio.org/episode/60d1cbae-d80a-4884-b9ce-cb084e4f82bf/screen-cleaning-superior-remakes.

Hoping this sequel lives up to the hype, on Screen Cleaning.

Back to the Movies

After a long absence Jeff and Cole finally got back to their happiest place on earth. Okay, so it's not quite Disneyland, but it sure was great to be eating popcorn and watching movies on the big screen again. But what movies are playing and how has the box office been doing this Summer? Jeff reviews the 2020 release he saw, Trolls: World Tour and Cole talks about some of the 80's classics that he has the chance to see for the first time in theaters. They also test your box office memories of Summer blockbusters of years past. The theaters may have been closed, but we've been with you every week on Screen Cleaning.

Books, Movies, and How to Adapt Them ft. Artemis Fowl

Yet another beloved juvenile fiction series has made its way to the big screen. Well, nothing is really on big screens now-a-days, but Kenneth Branagh's Artemis Fowl is streaming on Disney+ right now! The books already have a huge audience thanks to the characters and world building of author Eoin Colfer, and he's on the show to talk about his inspiration for the novels and seeing the setting come alive (20:04). Rod and Cole then talk about other YA book adaptations and their varied success rate. Based on the best selling novel by Jeffrey L. Simpson, it's Screen Cleaning.

Turner/AT&T/Warner Brothers/DC are all in the HBO Max umbrella. Cole signed up as soon as he could (for a week's free trial at least) and explains what you can find and expect with the new service. Social Distancing has also brought a resurgence in the drive-in movie and Jeff has a review of a new film playing in those venues across the country.
For two months of quarantine in the US, the outlook for new releases has been dim. But there is one film still on the schedule for mid-July that demands to be seen on the big screen and will take the temperature of our potential return to theaters. Tenet will be Christopher Nolan's 11th feature film and boy do we hope to see it in a couple months. Dive into the Screen Cleaning archives today as we listen back to the tenth ever episode where Jeff and Cole recap the films of Chris Nolan up to Dunkirk including his favorite tropes, stellar use of music, and of course Batman. You're not dreaming or traveling through time, for the first time on the podcast feed, it's the films of Christopher Nolan on Screen Cleaning.

Movies Are The Real Final Frontier

Great TV doesn’t always translate to the big screen. But there is one genre that has better luck than most, that is Science Fiction; probably in no small part due to the on again off again (and on and off) success of the Star Trek films. Today is a very special episode of Screen Cleaning as we are joined by Walter Koenig to talk about stories from Hollywood, playing Chekov for TV and film, and his new book Beaming Up and Getting Off: Life Before and Beyond Star Trek. We’re going warp factor nine, full speed ahead into Star Trek nerdiness on Screen Cleaning today. Engage!

A Quibi is a Unit of Time

Everybody's got a gimmick now. The newest streaming service to land on our devices is Quibi, the platform with 7-10 minute shows and new content every day! Jeff and Cole downloaded it this week for you (and because they're willing to try anything for the duration of a free trial) and have reviews of some of the top new shows to stream. And as always there is plenty of entertainment news during the quarantine, this time all about the war between movie studios and theaters. Don't wait another Quibi, listen to Screen Cleaning now.

The NEW New AFI Top 100 Movies

In 1998 the American Film Institute released a ranked list of the 100 Greatest Movies of All Time. That list was amended in 2007. We at Screen Cleaning think it might be time to look at it again. Jeff and Cole spend today recapping their favorites and breaking down the top 10; then suggest some films the AFI missed the first two times. If you’re looking for film recommendations during the quarantine, this is a good place to start. Even the SC guys have a few movies they’ve Been Meaning To Watch that they’ll check off this week. Everyone loves a good list, especially on Screen Cleaning.

Spring Cleaning on Screen Cleaning

Spring is in the air, even if you're stuck inside, so let's do a little Spring Cleaning of those movie shelves. Jeff and Cole are looking through their tapes, dvds, and blu-rays; even dusting off the digital library so to speak, to find the films they need to watch again. And every movie fan has got some on the shelves that they bought meaning to watch whether because of the director or actors or a pretty case or maybe it was just on sale. Then with all this de-cluttering on the mind, if you could only put 10 movies on your shelf what would they be? We aren't mispronouncing the title of the show today, this is Spring Cleaning on Screen Cleaning.

Media Ideas for Families At Home

Movie theaters, sporting events, concerts, and more have been closed for a month now. Jeff and Cole have been spending the days watching movies, and they aren’t alone. Screens can make for good babysitters and time killers, but there are ways to make screen time positive time as well. Rod and Donna Gustafson are on the show today to give ideas for families to turn movies into educational and interactive activities. We’re in this together, but ya know, separately on Screen Cleaning.

Screen Cleaning: Quarantined

Social distancing can’t keep Jeff and Cole from bringing you the best in entertainment news. And if you’re anything like these two movie fans, you’ve been killing the time at home in front of screens. Today they share what they’ve been watching including some self-isolation stories. And Jeff brought some trivia about end of the world media. How well can Cole (and all of you) remember your zombie survival skills. It’s not the end of the world, it’s just Screen Cleaning.

Look Who's Talking

Welcome to the Second Not-Quite-Annual Screen Cleaning Baby Show. Sometimes is seems like Jeff and Cole just starting talking about movies yesterday and then you realize this is the second time the show has taken a little break to celebrate the Simpson family welcoming a bundle of joy into the world. Yes Jeff has the week off, but earlier in the month they got together to talk about memorable baby movies and cute babies in movies. There is definitely movie news to talk about though and Rod Gustafson joins the program to go over the many changes in the industry as we all react to COVID-19. Baby, it's cold outside, but watching movies is a great indoor activity with Screen Cleaning.

Go-To TV and Movies

Let's say, hypothetically of course, that a deadly virus and mass panic is sweeping the nation. You're planning to socially distance for a couple weeks. You need something to occupy your time. Sports are cancelled, theme parks are closed, and every new movie release has been postponed. Now's the time to cross some things off that Netflix queue, and return to the shows that are reliably there for you. If you're not ready to try out something new, everyone has those go-to movies and shows that they turn to. These are Jeff and Cole's. Cleaning all the computer screens in the office just in case, this is Screen Cleaning.

Harrison Ford is in theaters again with Call of the Wild. No actor has embraced getting cool as you get old the way he has; with no hesitation to revisit the historic roles of his past. Today Jeff and Cole take a look movie by movie, era by era, at the quotable characters Harrison Ford has brought to life in his career.
Most Portrayed Characters in Film

There's another Peter Pan movie in theaters. A couple years after another Robin Hood. And remember when Guy Ritchie made a King Arthur flick? There are satirical, adventurous, and Disney animated versions of all these iconic literary characters. Today Jeff and Cole talk about some of their favorite and most common fictional and real characters to come up in movies and television. Also Wendy, that all-new Peter Pan story is way more than just another boring retelling of Neverland. Stay tuned for a review of that and Harrison Ford’s Call of the Wild. Jeff and Cole are always new, never boring characters on Screen Cleaning.

There were plenty of snubs and we share some of our favorites including Just Mercy, which Rod reviews. The award for best movie podcast from Provo, Utah goes to…Screen Cleaning.

January may be over but our vision for 2020 is just beginning. Sure you may have cheated on some of your other resolutions, but today Jeff and Cole are making goals they can stick to by focusing on the movies. What are some of your screen related resolutions for the year? Also since so many resolutions revolve around food, and food and the movies go hand in hand, let's tell some theater food stories too. And before the dead movie month of January is over, we are sure to mention the festival going on a couple hours north in Sundance.
Oscars Noms & What to Watch in January

The annual question has come again, what can you watch in theaters in January? Well this week the Oscar Nominations were released, you could check out some of the classy movies from limited release at the end of last year and are now expanding to theaters near you. Apparently there are 14 movies in development at Lucasfilms, so if you want to refresh on the Skywalker Saga you can watch the big blockbuster that came out around Christmas. And then, there’s the movies actually debuting in January. Jeff and Cole take a look back at January’s past and find some of the good over the years, and also react to the Oscar hopefuls still in theaters this year. So what kind of movies are in theaters in January? Varying quality. Just like Screen Cleaning.

Almost Real Reality TV

There's a celebrity in the room. Today Cole gets the once in a lifetime opportunity to interview a Disney+ star. A multi-talented actor, singer, and reality TV VIP is in the studio on Screen Cleaning today and his name is Jeff Simpson. BYU Radio’s own was recently in an episode of Encore! (the Fiddler on the Roof episode, check it out) and we get some of the behind the scenes stories on today’s show. Also Cole has been dying to talk about reality TV for years on the program, so this was as good an excuse as any. You won’t be able to take him seriously talking about horror movies again after you hear him gush about this season premiere of The Bachelor. Always keeping it real, on Screen Cleaning.

A Decade of Good Movies. And Star Wars.

The past ten years have been exciting for movie fans. We saw the conclusion of the movies-based-on-YA novels trend with Harry Potters 7 & 8 at the beginning of the decade. There was a resurgence of practical action led by Tom Cruise, gritty James Bond, John Wick, and of all franchises The Fast and the Furious. And Disney bought the world acquiring Pixar (again?), Marvel, and Star Wars. Jeff Simpson and Cole Wissinger look back at their favorite movies and trends of the decade. And also finally chat WITH SPOILERS about that new Star War and how The Skywalker Saga concluded. Here’s to more popcorn in the 2020’s.

'Tis also the season for new movie releases. Maybe you've heard there's a Star Wars? Jeff and Cole independently and spoiler free give their reviews. Marry Christmas from the Screen Cleaning team and God bless us, everyone.

Movie Trilogies Bracket

There's something about a movie trilogy. Some franchises go on and on too long or some fizzle out before they get a chance, but the rule of three has always held true in Hollywood. Today Jeff Simpson, Cole Wissinger, and special guest Rod Gustafson (because you need three judges to judge the great three-ilogies) will be going through a bracket to determine our favorite movie trios. You can play along on the bracket below and keep track if our picks match up with yours.

Jumanji: Sucked into the Game

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was the surprise hit of 2017 where four unlikely friends get sucked into a video game. Now the sequel is on its way, which got Jeff and Cole thinking. If they could pick a video game to get sucked into which would it be? And could they survive with just three lives? Around Halloween we talked about a great spooky playlist to listen to while the trick-r-treaters come knocking. Now that it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas we thought we'd give this holiday the same treatment. Feel free to sing along, and play along, today on Screen Cleaning.

The movie trilogies bracket is next week, so don't forget to vote for your chance at a fabulous prize:

Sports Movie Bracket

Happy Thanksgiving from the Screen Cleaning team. As we're spending the holiday with our families, and hope you are doing the same, we bring a favorite from the Screen Cleaning archives. A sports movie bracket during March Madness was the first movie bracket we did on the show, but it was before we had the podcast feed. Now for the first time on your device, hear what Jeff and Cole thought the greatest sports movie of all time was. All this is to get ready for two weeks from now when we talk about our favorite movie trilogies. Before we launch into the bracket you can also hear the best in news this Thanksgiving week and a review for a family movie to check out for the holiday, Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Happy Thanksgiving!

A Classy Show About Classical Music in Movies

Oh I recognize that fancy song, but what's it called? Classical music is used in movies all the time to enhance, contrast, or poke fun at what's happening on screen. Jeff and Cole made a list of their favorite classic works in movies and invited in Eric Glissmeyer of Classical 89 to provide some history and information and sometimes just the names of the songs that we recognize from film. Also get ready for the holiday weekend with reviews of Knives Out, Charlie's Angles, and 21 Bridges. Finally we Pan for Good to find some forgotten Thanksgiving set movies for that holiday between Halloween and Christmas. Always classy, and sometimes classic, it's Screen Cleaning.

We are focusing on great movie trilogies in our next bracket challenge. Visit brackets.commoninja.com/bracket/e696e180-a128-4e7c-8e7e-fc496c2d8c16 to vote for your favorites. After some technical difficulties, it should be available for vote on all devices.

Fall Movie Preview

It's that time of the movie calendar when studios starting bringing out the big guns. Not necessarily movies \*with\* big guns (those come out in the summer) but there are a lot of releases, some with awards aspirations. Jeff and Cole had such a busy week reviewing everything that they enlisted the help of Rod Gustafson, friend of the show and longtime critic from Canada. Today hear their thoughts on Jojo Rabbit, Last Christmas, Harriet, Midway, Doctor Sleep, and Ford v. Ferrari. It's also a good time to look ahead at the big releases for the rest of the year and movies to keep an eye on going forward. It's never too early for some bold Oscars predictions on Screen Cleaning.

You can enter to win our Trilogy Bracket Challenge at the link below. Our show on the best movie trilogies of all time will air on December 14th. So that's your deadline folks.

Cleanse the Palate Movies

Jeff and Cole watched a lot of horror movies during October, but the calendar page turned and they need a bit of a reset. And it’s not just horror that can take it out of you. Sometimes after engaging your brain watching a meta-comedy, or being on edge watching a serious drama you just need to breathe for a second before you can get to sleep. That’s what these movies and TV shows are for. Take notes for some feel-good media that can restore your faith in humanity. This show is our break between Halloween movies and the Oscar Fall Movie Season around the corner. Now take a breath and reeeeelax with us.

Today Jeff and Cole talk Halloween kids movies. They also add a few good combos for a horror double feature if you’re in the mood.
Classic Horror Books and Stories

Need something to listen to that will put you in a Halloween mood? We recommend this podcast! But also Jeff recommends a few short stories he listened to on audio book that are easily digestable in short bursts. And while you're at the library why not check out one of the horror classics like Frankenstein or Dracula. We'll give you a taste (a bite? which is the better vampire pun?) of those today. Then Cole gives a little Horror History 101 focused on these classic tales turned movies. And don't forget the creepy movie soundtracks if you need something on in the background.
The One Where We Pick Our Favorite Seasons of TV

The fall season can mean many things. Football is back and baseball is winding down. Horror movies and haunted houses creep up all around. And new seasons of fall television are hitting screens across America. Forget streaming for a moment, we are reviewing one new show per network today based solely on their pilot episodes. Sitting through first episodes of varying quality got us thinking about the best pilots ever (the pilot that crashed in the plane during the pilot of Lost gets an honorable mention). Then we take a journey through great TV and talk the best single seasons from the best shows. And unlike so many great shows over the years, we know when to quit, and that’s by talking about the best finales of TV history. Check if your favorite show got renewed here on Screen Cleaning.

Movies Similar to Other Movies

Have you ever started a movie and then realized it wasn’t quite what you remembered? And then it turns out it’s not the same movie at all! Like that one that came out in ’98 with all the ants trying to fight for independence. Or the magician movie from 2006 with the twist ending. We try to parse out these weirdly similar trends in the movie industry. All this is on the heels of yet another Yeti movie (in case you missed Smallfoot AND Missing Link) called Abominable out this weekend. We review that, and Judy, and give the rest of the best of entertainment news of the week. I hope you don’t confuse us for that other movie podcast with two millennial white guys.

TV Movies

For a certain generation TV movies meant a lower quality. Netflix and the streaming world is constantly changing how we view our media, and they have also upped the quality of movies made to be seen on the small screen. We review one of their newest originals Tall Girl along with Ad Astra and Downton Abbey, speaking of TV movies. Jeff and Cole also have a conversation about movies based on TV shows and the many ways Hollywood has cashed in on rabid TV fanbases. Don’t change the channel, it’s Screen Cleaning.

The Theater Experience

Movies are just part of your experience when you go to the theater, but if you're planning a night out, there's a lot more to consider. It's possible to make the most of a bad movie or have a great film ruined by a chatty or distracted audience. Jeff and Cole tell the stories of some of their favorite, most memorable, or most cringy experiences that just happened to occur at the theater. And because of their other great love, they also chat about some favorite foods, snacks, and drinks they enjoy at the movies.

Fresh News on Rotten Tomatoes

The point of Screen Cleaning is that Jeff Simpson and Cole Wissinger have different opinions on movies, TV, music, and more. It turns out they even disagree on how people disagree about movies. Jeff checks the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes before every new film, and Cole stays away from it like the bad smelling fruit that it is. Today they bring in media reporter Ashley Rodriguez to shed some light on what the percentages on Rotten Tomatoes mean for fans, movies, and their box office. She also joins Jeff and Cole in a discussion on their favorite low reviewed movies of all time.

Big Summer Movie Wrap Up

A long time ago on a show that now seems far far away, Jeff Simpson and Cole Wissinger predicted what the highest domestic earners at the box office would be this Summer. Today they look back and compare their guesses with what actually happened, and movie theater treats are on the line. Hear about the blockbusters, bombs, and underrated gems of the summer movie season. And what genre was totally missing from their theater watching experience this year after being so important last year. Happy Labor Day weekend and say goodbye to summer movie-style with Screen Cleaning.

And if you want to keep Jeff and Cole, noted math novices, honest in their scoreboard tracking, keep a pen a paper handy. And maybe check out the episode where the predictions were made right here:

Back to School Movies

Before the Summer is properly over, it is time in many parts of the country to go back to school. In an effort to ease the pain that school can bring, Jeff and Cole bring the movies into the classroom. There are many kinds of school movies out there like the new kid, going to school with your parents, the classic body swap movie and others. We studied up and talk about them all today. Jeff also reviews the new faith-based film Overcomer and we take a look at the box office one more time before next week’s big summer wrap up. Whether you’re enjoy the last few weeks of summer or looking forward to getting the kids off to school again, we come together over movies today on Screen Cleaning.

High School Movie Soundtrack

High school movies always have the coolest soundtracks. And it makes sense right, because music is so important to high school life. Well Jeff and Cole are looking back to their times in high school and some of the tracks that might have made the cut if they were the subjects of a high school movie. What were the quintessential slow dance ballads, car jams, and fun songs that punctuated their best four years? Richard Linklater has captured high school on film (with some killer albums) and has a new movie out this weekend, Where’d You Go Bernadette. They guys review that along with Angry Birds 2, Brian Banks, and The Peanut Butter Falcon. Dance through memory lane today on Screen Cleaning.

Scary Podcasts to Listen to in the Dark

There are many kinds of scary stories out there. This week Jeff and Cole look to movies, books, and TV for some different types and tropes in horror. There are common locations where horror takes place, common enemies to fend off, and common fears they prey on. All this leading up to a review of Guillermo del Toro’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark as well as a few other movies you can catch in theaters this weekend. Stay tuned for an update on the box office and all the best in entertainment news on this summer spooktacular episode of Screen Cleaning.

Today Jeff and Cole share some great stylish movies proving that a focus on visuals and sound can make for a great movie too. We can’t totally ignore that car chase movie though so stay tuned for a review of Hobbs & Shaw.
Movies Examine the Afterlife

There are a surprising number of movies where people see dead people. It’s not always horror or comedy where those ghosts need busting either. Filmmakers through the years have told serious stories exploring what the afterlife could look like for us and those we love. Jeff and Cole take the dive into the unknown today and talk about the most interesting, thought provoking, funny, or plain enjoyable versions of afterlife on the big screen. Comic-Con was last week, and the guys have an extended news wrap up talking about trailers, tv series, and of course Marvel Phase 4. Finally, they talk the Box Office and give two small screen recommendations that present two very different versions of the afterlife in Panning for Good. Hopefully always a stairway to heaven, not a highway to hell on Screen Cleaning.

Rip-Offs and Re-Makes

When referring to movies in 2019, you have to include the year of release. Are you critical of the singing in The Lion King (1994) or (2019)? Was the monster weird looking in Godzilla (1998) or (2019)? And sure the second Spider-Man movie was the best one, but do you mean (2004) or (2019)? Remakes are nothing new in Hollywood, but it sure seems they are dominating the screens of late, especially with Disney firmly on board. Today Jeff and Cole rank those Disney live action remakes and also talk rip-offs in movies as well as music, books, and even snacks. The Summer Box Office Report is full of remakes, reboots, and sequels. And as always they bring the best in news and dig a little deeper in Panning for Good. Always fresh every week, except when we replay half an episode from last year, here on Screen Cleaning.

In the middle of every baseball season the teams take a break and celebrate the All-Stars from the first half of the year. As two baseball fans, Jeff and Cole bring this idea to the movies today. What movies have hit it out of the park, what actor has had the most versatile year, who is getting voted in based more on past accomplishments? Then the festivities continue as we discuss who we want to see in the celebrity softball game and homerun derby. Also keep it tuned for the best news of the week and our box office update.

Some people may have wondered if the Screen Cleaning guys would go on vacation over the July 4th weekend. But we will not go quietly into the night. We will not vanish without a fight. We're going to live on. We're going to survive. Today, we celebrate our Independence Day! Okay, actually yesterday, but when President Bill Pullman gets on a roll, it makes you want to celebrate all year long. Independence Day (the movie) was released unsurprisingly this weekend 23 years ago and Jeff and Cole take a look at it and some other 4th of July releases through the years.

Comic Book Actors

When everyone showed up in Endgame, did you recognize any of those actors from other comic book movies? It turns out when comic books give inspiration for the biggest blockbusters each year, they will also draw similar folks to play their heroes. And villains. Today Jeff and Cole try to clear up and have fun with some of the actors that keep showing up in capes and spandex on the screen. Then they'll play a fun hypothetical inspired by the movie Yesterday, in theaters...well yesterday actually. Also stay tuned for a review of Spider-Man: Far From Home, the best entertainment news of the week, and a report on the Summer Blockbuster Scoreboard.

Movies That Made Us Want To Read

They say to always read the book before you see the movie, but things don't always work out that way. Movie fans that Jeff and Cole are, it tends to be the movie that prompts them to go check out the book. Sometimes it's because the movie was so good and intriguing and sometimes not, but anyway these movies went, they at least got us back into the pages (or e-pages) of a book. Also stay tuned for the good in entertainment news of the week, a review of Pixar's Toy Story 4, and an update on the Summer Box Office Scoreboard. Catch up on your summer reading on the screen today on Screen Cleaning.

Do Old TV Shows Hold Up: Part II

Last season on Screen Cleaning we watched older shows in genres like detective, spin-off, and animation to see if they are still interesting today. This year in the exciting conclusion to Do Old TV Shows Hold Up we focused in on specific sub-genres to compare old television with new. If you are looking for a horror show about kids fighting the forces of evil from a small Indiana town, or a procedural show about a crime solving author assisting the police force in a new murder every week, then we have the old AND new shows to satisfy. Also we review Men In Black: International and a couple new Netflix releases along with updating the Summer Box Office Scoreboard.

And be sure to go back and listen to Part 1!

Different Directors

The X-Men are now a Days of 20th Century Fox Past. Starting after the release of Dark Phoenix they will be under new management. Disney management. It’s a new opportunity for new producers and directors to bring the fans some of their favorite characters. So in true X-Men Alternate Universe style, Jeff and Cole decided to take a peek into the parallel universes where some of their favorite film franchises (with less than stellar sequels) were given to different directors. Also stay tuned for a review of Dark Phoenix and a comic book themed Panning for Good.

Screen Cleaning: The Musical

Today the radio waves are alive, with the sound of music. The music of movie musicals that is. Listen (and maybe sing) along as Jeff and Cole talk about some of their favorite songs from bad musicals, bad songs from good musicals, best musical bio-pics, best musical episodes of television, and of course their favorite movie musicals of all time. We'll give credit to the golden age and some more recent movies as well. Also stay tuned for how Disney's newest live-action-music-filled-remake Aladdin impacted the Summer Box Office Scoreboard and a review of the most recent blockbuster this year, Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Behind the Scenes

Thanks to Marvel movies we have all sat through at least some of the credits that roll after a movie. There sure are a lot of people that contribute to bringing our favorite blockbusters to the screen. Today we speak to the Senior Vice President of Production and Development at Lionsgate, Matt Janzen. What does a studio executive, producer, and assistant do? And can the people in the business end still enjoy the movies they bring to life? Also Jeff and Cole share some of their favorite behind the scenes stories, as well as recap this week in the Summer Movie Box Office. Also stay tuned for reviews of Aladdin and The Sun is Also a Star.

Conversations with a Director

May 10th is the 150th anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad in Utah. Hollywood veteran Brian Finn has written, directed, and acted in a new film in limited release this weekend about this event and how history can bring out the best in us today. Resilience and the Last Spike tells the harrowing journey of a young girl trying to find her family amidst adventuring across the beautiful Utah desert. Brian tells about his experiences making this film and some of his background in the movie business including stunt work. Jeff and Cole give their review of this new movie and a couple others out this week, as well as talk about some of their favorite practical movie stunts. Don’t try this at home this week on Screen Cleaning.

Summer Box Office Preview

There is plenty to be excited about in the movie world this Summer. The first week in May signals the start of the summer movie season at the Box Office, so Jeff and Cole take a look at the months ahead. Which movies do they predict will bring in the most money and what are they most excited for? The buzz around summer movies is heating up with the weather, but not for every movie equally. The Sonic trailer received some negative reactions this week, so the guys take a chance to remember some of their favorite trailers over the years. How do movie studios get the people excited for these big budget movies? We don't know, because we get excited for ALL the movies, here on Screen Cleaning.

These are the actors that you know you've seen before, but from what? Then when you check their filmography you see they've been in just about everything. Also tune in for reviews of Storm Boy, Breakthrough, and Shazam!

Next week is our big Marvel Movie Bracket.
The Numerous Nutty Nightmares of Tim Burton

You just know a Tim Burton movie when you see it. An angled camera shot pans over suburbia, past a forest of gnarled trees, onto a lonely house on the hill while a dead panned, deep voiced (probably horror icon from the 60’s) narrator introduces us to our protagonist. A pale faced, black haired Johnny-Depp-type protagonist just doesn’t fit in. He is constantly shown affection by a quirky, kind, and probably blonde lady but he is too focused on The Mission to bother with that right now. A Danny Elfman score swells, the fat rich bad guys are defeated, and there are probably stop motion skeletons. Tim Burton has a type, and we love him for it. Today join us in celebrating the wonderful career of Tim Burton.

We'll break out the yarn and bulletin boards to connect a young boy looking into a snowglobe in the series finale of St. Elsewhere to which cigarettes they smoked on Breaking Bad. Or maybe explore what Mary Poppins has in common with Doctor Who AND Harry Potter. We'll even ask the right questions about why we theorize in the first place and what role creators and authors play in the process. Outside the web of conspiracy we bring you the best in entertainment news including a review of Captain Marvel and Pan to find the Good in a theory about the Beatles that could lead to a new film or even checking out an old one. Do you believe, here on Screen Cleaning.

Let's Play a Game

Podcasts are all fun and games until, well, you start playing games. This week we took a Screen Cleaning field trip to different gaming destinations and recorded our fun. We ordered food and played some board games at the Good Move Café that offers a wide selection of card games, strategy games, role playing games, and of course board games. Then we went to a nickel arcade to check out the video games there. We had different strategies to get tickets like playing the game show games, the games of chance, or the carnival style games. Finally we visited a local escape room. Would we make it out at Get Out Games? Listen to find out. Also we react to the Oscars and other entertainment new from the week, and Jeff gives his review of Alita: Battle Angel.

Thanks again to the Good Move Café and Get Out Games in Provo for helping us out this week. You can check them out here:

Love is in the Air-Waves

Media sometimes sends a warped message about love, especially this time of year. In honor of Valentine's Day Jeff, Cole, and Mickey took a look at the way love is presented in reality TV, talk radio, and of course rom-coms. Where is the line between harmless entertainment and toxic manipulation? We don’t know, we just watch the stuff, but explore with us as we soak up the love. Also learn a little about how some rom-coms stack up on the Bechdel Test, and get reviews of the two big movie releases this weekend with Isn’t It Romantic and Happy Death Day 2U. We promise not to set too unrealistic of expectations today on Screen Cleaning.

The Wide World of Animation

Since Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Disney has been the name in animation. But there is so much more out there. Today we speak with former industry man turned college professor Kelly Loosli about his time in LA and some of his favorite animated features. Then Jeff and Cole discus the different kinds of animation like stop motion, computer generated, rotoscoping, and of course traditional hand drawn as well. The Oscars will be giving their award for best animated feature AND short at the end of the month, so we also spend a little time talking about our favorite Pixar shorts. The Super Bowl was the big news in entertainment this week, even if you didn’t watch for the sports, there were commercials, trailers, and live music performances (even featuring a famous animated character). We give our thoughts and also preview next week’s Valentine special of Screen Cleaning.

It's coooold out there and Happy Groundhog Day. Sonny and Cher's music will forever be associated with the Bill Murray comedy and today we are going to talk about other great movie soundtracks. Unlike I Got You Babe, these are the songs and scores written specifically for the movies they appeared in. Jeff, Cole, and Mickey pick some of their favorite orchestral pieces and original songs. Also we share the best news from the week including quite a bit of news from one comic book studio. Then Jeff reviews The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part and They Shall Not Grow Old.

Is It Too Early To Show My Kids My Favorite Films?

Our host Jeff Simpson is an amazing dad. Most of the time. Sometimes his enthusiasm to share great movies with his young kids can get the best of him. But we are problem solvers here at Screen Cleaning, so we gathered some other movie loving dads from the office to help! Movie reviewers Shawn O’Neill and Rod Gustafson join Jeff and Cole on the show to share some movie sharing regrets and to offer some experience after raising a few kids of their own. Also on the show Jeff gives a review of the new kids movie out this weekend The Kid Who Would Be King. We also cover the best in entertainment news as usual, but this week that means Oscar Nomination reactions. And Producer Mickey lets us know what happens when those awards shows just can't quite decide on a winner.

Foreign Language Films

America has Hollywood, big summer blockbusters, and the Oscars. It is where our Screen Cleaning team lives and speaks English. But there is literally a whole world of cinema outside that we are opening our borders to today. Jeff, Cole, and Producer Mickey watched three films each from nine different countries total just to talk about them today. Also Mickey hit the streets to find out why typical people don't like foreign language films. Is it really that bothersome to read a movie? Also don't miss the news of the week and a review of the new release Glass (along with a fun feature on the other films and twists from writer/director M. Night Shyamalan). Finally Jeff Pans for Good with the movie Selma before this MLK day weekend.

Dark Ride Disneyland

The Happiest Place on Earth can sometimes be a crazy place. People that go to Disneyland can get a few different experiences, but most just go for the rides. Benjamin Thevenin headed a team at BYU creating an app that enhances the Disney experience. It adds a layer of augmented reality called Dark Ride Disneyland. Then Jeff puts his Southern California roots to the test talking about old Disney park rides and trivia. Also we review the Upside and hear from Rod Gustafson for a review of On the Basis of Sex expanding to wide release today. Enjoy the full Disney experience on Screen Cleaning.

Another Christmas Episode

We hope you haven’t packed away the decorations quite yet, because we are about to put a bow on the holiday season. The seasonal movies anyway. Today Jeff and frequent guest Jacob Gowans review some of their favorite Christmas Movies. Then Cole and other contributor Joel Hilton join the conversation to review some Christmas Movies that might not be anyone’s favorites, but they sure are entertaining. ‘Tis awards show season as well and Producer Mickey clues us in on some Grammy’s jargon. Also the gang looks ahead to some movie releases right around the corner in the New Year. And we wrap up the holiday with a Christmas Movie Quotes game that’s fun to play with the whole family. The Christmas spirit is still alive and well here on Screen Cleaning.

THE Christmas Carol

Movies based on books are nothing new, but each version usually adds something new. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens is a classic holiday tale and it's in the public domain, meaning anyone can use the story as a basis for a new movie or Christmas episode of their TV show. There are easily over 50 retellings of the familiar story on the screen and Jeff and Cole watched...well, not all of them, but certainly a few. There are good parts and character portrayals in each, so we cobbled our favorites together and present for you - not just A Christmas Carol - but THE Christmas Carol. 'Tis also the season for new movie releases. Bumblebee and Aquamancome out today and we've got your reviews. Marry Christmas from the Screen Cleaning team and God bless us, everyone.

Rotten Tomatoes

If you listen to Screen Cleaning you are probably curious about what people think about movies. Jeff and Cole give opinions, good or bad, every week. Rotten Tomatoes is one of the most popular movie review sites out there, but it is often misunderstood. The Tomato-Meter is a review aggregator that gives a percentage of good or bad reviews. Today we talk to Ashley Rodriguez of Quartz to talk about how Rotten Tomatoes really works and the effect it has on the industry. Generally when we give good or bad reviews on the show, Jeff and Cole are on opposite sides, but every so often a movie comes along that they can agree on. Mary Poppins Returns comes out next week and is definitely one of such movies. There are also two comic book releases this weekend with Once Upon a Deadpool and Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse and we review those too.

Music Reinvigorated by Movies

There are a hundred reasons why a song gets popular, but what about when it gets used in a popular movie? Jeff and Cole are joined today by Don Shelline, host of Through the Garage Door on BYU Radio, to talk about such songs. Music written for especially for movies need not apply. The critera are it had to have flopped when originally released or at least gained more popularity than it had originally by being used in a movie. Also Producer Mickey shares some of her favorite movie moments, we react to the Awards Shows news of the week, and we give some ideas for Christmas gifts for the cinefile on your list.

What to get the family for Christmas? Well if you're anything like Jeff and Cole, it will probably be movie related. With no family appropriate movies new to theaters this week, we talk about a new DVD release just in time for the holidays, Mission: Impossible - Fallout. In case you missed the sixth movie in theaters (or any of the first five too) we give a recap and share some of our favorite moments from the franchise. What are your favorite mask reveals, cold opens, or practical stunts? Also we update you on entertainment news this week, including a movie anniversary, and ask when early is too early for Christmas music.

Board Games

Happy Black Friday, what are you going to buy? A staple in my house every Christmas was a new board game. We ended up with quite a few, but not as many as frequent contributor, author, comic nerd, and board game expert Jacob Gowans. He and Jeff have a conversation about what makes a good game and good gaming etiquette to be reminded of before this holiday season of gathering around the Monopoly board. Jacob and Jeff then go head to head in game trivia with a movie twist. Also Thanksgiving is a big box office time of the year and we review three movies out this week Robin Hood, Green Book, and Creed II. We're getting you ready for the holiday push on Screen Cleaning. Batteries not included.

Do Old TV Shows Hold Up?

It’s a golden age of prestige television. Netflix, AMC, HBO, and others are all coming out with some of the best reviewed dramas and sit-coms of all time. So are we getting spoiled, and is it possible to enjoy old TV shows again? Jeff and Cole did the research and watched older shows that they hadn’t seen before or watched when they were kids; all to find out if they hold up to the modern standard. Also Jeff reviews a modern show that he believes will stand the test of time in Panning for Good, and they give their opinions on two movie sequels out this weekend Wreck It Ralph 2 and Fantastic Beasts 2. I wonder if our show will stand the test of time...

Superior Remakes

They say that you can never go home, but that never stops Hollywood from trying to revisit old concepts. Since we talk about good on Screen Cleaning we searched far and wide for remakes that are better than the original. Jeff and Cole are joined by Rod Gustafson of Parent Previews and the Lisa Valentine Clark show on BYU Radio. TV isn't immune to the remake trend and often fans clamor for a show to be 'saved' to another network or streaming service. But be careful what you wish for. We focus on a few of the shows that have had success in their later iterations, but they are the exception not the rule. Also Jeff gives his review of the new (and early for the Holiday season) release Illumination's Dr. Seuss' The Grinch, and Producer Mickey mediates the fight for who gets to review Harry Potter next week.

Stadium Music

The boys of fall just finished, but the NBA and NHL just started, and the NFL is in full swing. Ocotber is the only month of the year where all four major US sports play so here at Screen Cleaning we turn our screens to the sports channels today. Live sports are linked with music. Baseball is famous for Take Me Out to the Ballgame. Every home team has their own traditions and songs that can get the fans going. Bryce Lake is the guy behind all that music for BYU and he visits the show today to share some of his experiences and favorite songs. He also agrees to play a little Name-That-Tune with a sports-y twist. Also Jeff and Rod Gustafson share their reviews of two new movies out today, Bohemian Rhapsody and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, and Producer Mickey educates us on a famous movie sound effect we're sure you've heard before.

The Halloween Movie Bracket

We’ve been talking about it all month long, and today is the day. We put 16 Halloween and scary movie classics up against each other to determine the ultimate October movie. Movies were categorized as either Kids & Family, Comedy, Suspense, or Monster. A panel of 3rd party judges determined their winners, along with hundreds of entries from listeners, and of course Jeff and Cole’s picks. Today we spend the show talking about each of these movies, and why they are great! Listen close to see if your favorite gets to move on.

And for final reference to the bracket, even if voting has closed, check it out at:

Haunted Attractions

We've been getting into the Halloween spirit with horror movies and TV so far this month, but what about the other harvest time activities for families? The young kids might want to visit a pumpkin patch or maize maze. Teenagers love haunted houses and hayrides. And the whole family might enjoy some suspense theater. Producer Mickey visited some of these haunted attractions, and brought a recorder too. Now we all can visit these Halloween haunts from the comfort (and safety) of home. Jeff also interviews the owner of Castle of Chaos in Salt Lake City and gives a couple more scary movie reviews.

Don't forget next week is our big Halloween Movie Bracket episode. You can enter to win a free Audible code by picking your winners, taking a picture of the whole bracket, and sending it to our email at screencleaning@byu.edu. The bracket can be found at https://brackify.com/bracket/22849/Scary-Movies-on-Screen-Cleaning. Good luck!

Hitchcock

There is no director that embodied the classy side of horror more than Alfred Hitchcock. Each film, along with its Bernard Herrmann score, put viewers on the edge of their seat. And from our Clean Screens perspective, we also appreciate being scared without having the gore, language, or sexual content that usually accompanies the horror genre. That’s why the Master of Suspense has earned his own show during our month or horror, with special academic guest Kimball Jensen from the BYU Film department. Also Jeff reviews the two big family scary movie releases this October, The House with a Clock in its Walls and Goosebumps 2, and gives a spooky Panning for Good that Twilight Zone fans will be happy to hear. Warning: listening to Screen Cleaning won’t cause Vertigo, but it might cause you to go out and watch it.

Horror Anthology Tapes

There is a bite in the air, leaves are falling, and October is here. Screen Cleaning will be celebrating Halloween all month long, and today we focus on anthologies and mixed tapes. Sometimes a whole two-hour movie is just too much to fit into the busy schedule of parents and kids. Today Jeff and Cole focus on horror stories of more digestible lengths. If you had a six-hour tape, how would you fill it with your favorite spooky TV episodes or features from anthology movies? Jeff also compiled some short stories to listen to on audio book (or just read). If books aren’t your style to listen to in the car, Cole has a Halloween playlist of music to get you in the creepy, cooky, or spooky mood. We kick off the month in style, a gothic and rotting style, here on Screen Cleaning.

Dorothy was right that there is no place like home, but what makes your home feel like home? Documentarian Brad Barber is on the show today to talk about his series States of America, where each episode asks that question of one person in each state. When the official interview portion of the program is done, Jeff and Cole play a little 50 States Trivia, mainly about movies, but with other geography questions as well. Also Jeff reviews the new movie out today Smallfoot, we argue in The Movie Court, and Producer Mickey inducts another movie onto Mickey’s Mantle. You’re not in Kansas anymore (unless you live in Kansas of course) here on Screen Cleaning.

Formative Films

Welcome to Episode Number One! Sort of. Screen Cleaning is on at a new time with a new fancy logo, but the same hosts and great family friendly content. For all the new listeners, Jeff and Cole give an idea of who they are through the important movies/TV shows that shaped them. We give a lot of opinions on the show and those opinions have been formed over years of watching screens. Media happens in context, and this is that context. These aren't necessarily our favorite movies ever, but they are the most personal. So as we talk about movies and television and other pop culture on the show every week, remember that we can only give our opinions about media that works for us. Every family and every kid is scared by, touched by, or inspired by something different on the screen. We encourage you to go find it, together.
