That’s what prompted BYU special education professor Katie Steed to create a series of short training videos available online. Find them here. Giving Every Dollar a Name Guest: Bryan Sudweeks, Associate Teaching Professor of Finance, Brigham Young University What topic could be more important than learning to better manage your own money? BYU’s Marriott School of Management offers a free online course in Personal Finance. Today we get motivated to budget. Take the Personal Finance course! Modern Slavery (Originally aired Feb. 22, 2017) Guest: Kevin Bales, Co-Founder of Free the Slaves, Professor of Contemporary Slavery, University of Nottingham, UK Worldwide, there are more than 40-million people in slavery - and it's happening right here in the US and just about every other country on the planet. It's hard to believe. But research into the problem has uncovered evidence that we all might be contributing to the problem when we buy certain kinds of frozen fish or shrimp at the supermarket, for example. And furthermore, the slavery involved in the production of those items is also contributing to massive degradation of natural resources. Pass the Pho! (Originally aired May 2, 2017) Guest: Chef Mai Pham, Owner of Lemon Grass Kitchen, Author of “The Best of Vietnamese & Thai Cooking,” “Pleasure of the Vietnamese Table” and “Flavors of Asia” Pham is on a quest to get more Vietnamese and Thai food in American bellies. She’s the force behind a couple of successful restaurants in California and has spun some of her best recipes into ingredients other restaurants can use. That’s why she’s at BYU on this particular day, standing behind vats of boiling water, translucent rice noodles, and aromatic broth, giving Dining Services Executive Chef John McDonald a quick tutorial on pho. We join her to sample her creation and learn how to incorporate more Southeast Asian cuisine into our own menus. Metamessaging (Originally aired May 10, 2017) Guest: Deborah Tannen, PhD, Professor of Linguistics, Georgetown University, Author of “You’re the Only One I Can Tell: Inside the Language of Women’s Friendship” You know when you text someone a request, and they reply “sure”? No exclamation point, no smiling emoji, not even a capital “S”? Are they happy to help you out, but in a hurry and can’t take long to text, as in and energetic, “Sure!” or are they just saying “sure” because they can’t think of a way to say no?  The way words are said can matter as much as the words themselves. Digital communication is fraught with opportunities to send or receive the wrong message. But so is face-to-face conversation. Linguist Deborah Tannen studies the messages behind our messages.
