It's an enormous tragedy when a child dies in America today. But a century ago, losing a child was so common that families expected it to happen. Most parents had experienced it –rich or poor. And most of those children who died young in early 1900s America would survive if they were born today. We are the luckiest generation in history, says pediatrician Perri Klass, to be able to expect that we and our children will live to adulthood. Klass’ authored the book “A Good Time to Be Born: How Science and Public Health Gave Children a Future.”
